The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam AIPis a publicly funded German research institute founded in 1992, which emanated from the Berlin Observatory and the Astrophysical Observatory Potsdam AOP. Today, the AIP has an international reputation as a competence centre for the development of research technology in the fields of spectroscopy, robotic telescopes and EScience. About 100 scientists work on a variety of astrophysical topics such as magnetic fields, solar and stellar physics, stellar and galactic evolution and cosmology. The AIP is seeking a qualified Product Assurance Manager fm for the 4MOST astronomy instrumentation project. Overview The 4MOST instrument is built by an international consortium and is foreseen to be installed at the VISTA Telescope at the ESO Observatory Paranal in Chile. The 4MOST Product Assurance Manager PAM is part of the4MOST Project Management Team and reports to the Project Manager. He is responsible for system level Product Assurance Management. Product Assurance is understood as the combination of the quality and RAMS aspects of the project. Your tasks and responsibilities PA Management of the project phases Design, MAIT, Installation and Commissioning Defining realistic system and subsystem PA requirements including verification and validation requirements Preparation of the PA Plan and implementation at all consortium partners Defining and implementing good practise PA procedures, e.g. Failure Reporting and Corrective Action System FRACAS Implementing of Configuration Management Monitoring and control consortium partners PA activities System level risk and RAM assessments Safety compliance assessments in accordance with costumer requirements and EU legislation Ensuring that product liability requirements are met Overseeing of MAIT activities including Final Acceptance Tests Defining the formal acceptance requirements and conducting the Acceptance Reviews of all contractual deliverable items Required qualification Masters degree in Management, Engineering or equivalent education in engineering or technical sciences At least 3 years of experience as product assurance manager in research projects Relevant work experience in product assurance in international projects and in particular proven PA experience in the following areas of scientific instrumentation design development, manufacturing, testing, acceptance, configuration management and RAMS disciplines. The position is initially offered on a fixedterm contract of 2 years. Subject to employee performance, employment is expected to be renewed for a longerterm appointment. Employment will be based in Potsdam, Germany, but willingness to do some travel is expected. The salary is based on the German public service scale TVL. He reports directly to the AIP Executive Board. The 4MOST Project Manager leads an existing project management office for the entire consortium, consisting of scientific, managerial and engineering staff. Your tasks and responsibilities Management of the project phases Design, MAIT, Installation and Commissioning in an international consortium. Completing the work breakdown structure WBS and associated work package descriptions. Defining the work distribution in negotiations with the consortium members. Providing and monitoring all project plans including budget plans, milestones and detailed project schedules, etc. Effectively communicating project expectations and progress to team members and stakeholders. Coach, mentor, motivate and supervise project office team and consortium members. When required, determine and assess need for additional staff andor consultants in close collaboration with the Principal Investigator of the project. Proactively define and mitigate project risks. Required qualification Masters degree in Management, Engineering or equivalent, further education MBA, PhD will be an asset. At least 3 years of experience as project manager in research projects. Track record for successfully managing projects in a technicalRD or related engineering environment is strongly desired. The position is initially offered on a fixedterm contract of 2 years.
