Vodacom launches 5G broadband service in Lesotho

(Telecompaper) Vodacom Group announced that it has created Africa's first standards-based, commercial 5G service in Lesotho using 3.5GHz spectrum, initially to deliver fixed-wireless broadband services to two enterprise customers. The 5G service provides for quicker deployment of broadband services with fibre-like speeds.

Vodacom Group revenue up 4.2% in June quarter, adds 2.5 mln customers

(Telecompaper) Vodacom Group reported revenue for its fiscal first quarter ended 30 June up 4.2 percent to ZAR 21.55 billion. Service revenue also increased by 4.2 percent, to ZAR 17.81 billion, and was up 5.2 percent excluding currency effects.

Vodacom Tanzania, Azam Telecom win spectrum in 700 MHz band auction

(Telecompaper) Tanzania has raised USD 20 million from Vodacom Tanzania and newcomer Azam Telecom in a spectrum auction. Vodacom Tanzania acquired 2x10 MHz in the 700 MHz band for USD 10.01 million and Azam Telecom acquired 2x10 MHz for USD 10 million. The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) said Vodacom and Azam must ensure their mobile broadband services reach 60 percent of the population by 2021, rising to 90 percent by 2024.

Cell C drops Vodacom for roaming, inks new deal with MTN incl 4G access

(Telecompaper) South African operator Cell C announced it has entered into a far-reaching roaming agreement with MTN in order to complement Cell C's own mobile network. The agreement will see MTN providing both 3G and 4G services to Cell C in areas where Cell C has chosen to purchase coverage rather than self-build, mainly outside of the main metro areas. The operator said the introduction of 4G roaming will benefit customers significantly.
Vodacom Group FY revenue grows 6.3% to ZAR 86.4 bln

(Telecompaper) Vodacom Group's revenue grew 6.3 percent to ZAR 86.4 billion in the year ended 31 March, while normalised growth, excluding currency translation effects, was 7.8 percent. Group service revenue increased 3.4 percent to ZAR 70.6 billion and was up 5.1 percent on an adjusted basis. Net profit rose 18.6 percent to ZAR 15.56 billion, boosted by the Safaricom acquisition and a profit from the sale of Helios Towers Tanzania.
