Software Engineer Development and Maintenance of Astronomical Operations Software mf The Mission The Atacama Large Millimeter Array is an astronomical interferometer dedicated to studying star birth during the early universe as well as providing detailed imaging of local star and planet formation. The Very Large Telescope is a collection of unit telescopes capable of detecting objects roughly four billion times fainter than can be detected with the naked eye. Both telescopes are operated in international partnerships. The Challenge We are looking for an experienced software engineer to contribute to the development and maintenance of a suite of astronomical operations software. The successful candidate will support these activities at the site of Termas longterm customer, an international astronomical institute based in Munich. The scope of work includes requirement capture, testing, integration, deployment and enduser support. It requires regular interaction with scientists and support staff. This is a fulltime position with a planned starting date 1st of June 2015. Your Qualifications Specific responsibilities of the position include Essential A university degree in computer science or equivalent experience Experience developing datacentric, Javabased applications Good knowledge of SQL Experience with Linux English fluency spoken and written, both in formal and informal situations. Note that English is the working language Other desirable qualifications Previous experience with Javascript and related technologies AngularJS, jQuery Some background in astronomy. ISSColumbus Operations Logistics Engineer mf The Mission The Columbus laboratory, launched in 2008, is ESAs biggest single contribution to the International Space Station ISS. The 4.5metre diameter cylindrical module is equipped with flexible research facilities that offer extensive science capabilities. During its projected lifespan, Earthbased researchers, together with the ISS crew, will conduct experiments in life sciences, materials science, fluid physics and a whole host of other disciplines, all in weightlessness. Under contract from ESA, the Columbus Control Centre ColCC, located at the German Aerospace Center DLR facility in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, works closely with the other ISS control centres including Houston and Moscow. ColCC is responsible for all Columbus systems and for European science activities on board the ISS. The Challenge We are looking for an experienced logistics engineer to directly support the Head of the Columbus and Payloads Engineering. Located at ESTEC in The Netherlands, you will be responsible for the planning and execution of inventory management, logistics documentation and database management, as well as ground processing support to the European logistics tasks for the International Space Station ISS. Specific responsibilities of the position include 1. Inventory Management Definition, procurement and acceptance of services, equipment, tools and facilities required for inventory management and warehousing Supervision of Industry contractors in performance of ground inventory and warehousing management Coordination of Onorbit stowage and Inventory management Coordination of and participation to physical hardware inspections at the various warehouses in collaboration with the Columbus Operations Project Controller Participation to the ESANASA stowage teleconferences Coordination of spares procurements into the logistics inventory management system. 2. Logistics Documentation and Database Management Responsibility of maintaining existing logistic databases Follow up of the development of an integratedcentral database Management of the installation and utilisation of logistics simulation models. 3. Ground Processing and Transportation Management Coordination at any launch site of the support and resupply of all ISS cargo and spares flown as part of the ESAs allocation Coordination of ESA Cargo Reviews for launching of ESA hardware on all vehicles ship shoot approach Support to Public Affairs Office PAO Public Relations PR hardware providers in getting the appropriate documentation for formal processing JF906907, Materials Certificate, etc. including provision of Sharp Edges Inspection Report for PAO PR items Coordination of transport tofrom all possible launch sites Definition and coordination of launch site procedures with NASA and other International Partners NASARKAJAXAfor processing European hardware at their sites Coordination of the provision of equipment, tools and facilities required at the launchintegration sites to support ground processing and transportation 4. Logistics Planning and Implementation Participation to the integrated logistics and maintenance planning and implementation of the overall logistics and maintenance support program for the ISS Integration of the required products in the logistics planning and implementation system for ISS Coordination of the Common Spare Pool CSP with NASA and review of the annually provided NASA report Interface and coordination with Industry, NASA and International Partners on logistics and maintenance activities Participation to the monthly MVCB Multilateral Vehicle Control Board Coordination and maintenance of the Integrated Maintenance Plan for all ESA ISS infrastructure element 5. Logistics Support to ISS Increment Operations Coordination of the generation and approval of all logistic products for each increment such as increment maintenance plan, manifest requests and onboard stowage and inventory Coordination with NASA and other International Partners on any imagery issues Coordination of ESA Digital Imagery Management System DIMS requests with NASA Coordination of imagery requirements with the Columbus Control Centre ColCC, the USOCs and HSOK, including Increment Definition and Requirements Document IDRD Annexes 3 5 PIRATE Report to NASA You will be expected to coordinate these activities with a team of engineers responsible for the sustaining engineering of the ESA ISS infrastructure, and the ISS cargo owners.
