Telekom told to change StreamOn zero-rating after net neutrality, roaming violations

(Telecompaper) Germany's national telecoms regulator, the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA), has banned aspects of Deutsche Telekom's zero-rated music and video streaming service StreamOn and called on the company to implement changes to align StreamOn with EU requirements on net neutrality and roaming. Telekom has until the end of March 2018 to implement these changes or risk facing fines, said the agency.

Orange sales growth slows on roaming impact, EBITDA still up in Q3

(Telecompaper) Orange saw its sales growth slow in the third quarter on the introduction of roam-like-home in the EU, but said increased volumes of visitor roaming largely offset the drop in roaming prices. Total revenues fell 0.5 percent to EUR 10.274 billion, but were up 0.9 percent on a comparable basis.

COMESA agrees deal to abolish phone roaming charges

(Telecompaper) Members of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) have agreed to abolish telephone roaming charges in the bloc, reports Business Daily. The bloc said in a final report that although pricing of voice services in many African countries was becoming competitive and comparable with the rest of the world, the cost of broadband continued to be out of reach of most people. It said that users in Africa paid on average 25 percent of monthly gross national income (GNI) per capita on mobile calls compared with 11 percent in other developing nations.

EU residents aware of roaming changes, but majority still restrict usage

(Telecompaper) A large majority of EU residents are aware of the end to roaming charges since 15 June and many are using their phones more abroad as a result, according to the first survey by Eurostat since 'roam like at home' started. The survey conducted at the end of August across all 28 EU states found that 71 percent of people are aware of the end to roaming charges, rising to 86 percent of those who have traveled to another EU country since 15 June. However, a majority who traveled in the EU since 15 June are still restricting their usage in some way.
