Softbank to acquire ARM for GBP 24.3 billion

(Telecompaper) Softbank has agreed to buy mobile chip designer ARM Holdings for GBP 24.3 billion. The offer of 1,700 pence per share is a premium of 63 percent on ARM's average share price in the past three months. The takeover is expected to significantly strengthen Softbank's position in the Internet of Things. SoftBank said it intends to maintain ARM's organisation based on the UK, including existing senior management, the brand and the partnership-based business model. The Japanese company also pledged to at least double the employee headcount in the UK over the next five years and also increase staff numbers at ARM outside the UK.

BT confirms GBP 6 billion fibre, 4G, customer service spend

(Telecompaper) BT has announced that Openreach and EE will invest around GBP 6 billion between them over the next three years in the first phase of a plan to extend superfast broadband and 4G coverage to more than 95 percent of the UK by 2020. The plan will include an increased focus on FTTP technology, aiming to reach two million premises with FTTP, mainly in new housing developments, high streets and business parks. BT Group CEO Gavin Patterson also confirmed that customer service would be another area of focus, with contact centre work being returned to the UK and Openreach aiming to cut the number of missed appointments by half within 12 months.

Sky's 9-mth operating profit up 12% to GBP 1.14 bln

(Telecompaper) European pay-TV provider Sky reported operating profit for the nine months to March up 12 percent year-on-year to GBP 1.14 billion after experiencing "good trading" across all its markets. Group revenues grew by 5 percent to GBP 8.72 billion, with a 6 percent increase in UK and Ireland and a 10 percent growth in Germany and Austria offsetting a 2 percent fall in sales in Italy. Overall Sky said 177,000 new customers joined in the quarter to the end of March to reach a total of 21.7 million across its European operations.

Alphabet to pay GBP 130 mln to end tax case with UK govt

(Telecompaper) Google parent Alphabet will pay GBP 130 million to end a tax settlement case with the UK authorities, Bloomberg reported, saying the deal covers taxes going back to 2005. The move has brought in sharp criticism as opposition politicians question how the government handled the case.

CityFibre to buy Kcom long-distance network for GBP 90 mln

(Telecompaper) Kcom has agreed to sell its national network infrastructure to CityFibre for GBP 90 million. The assets include 1,100 route km of metro network in 24 towns and cities, and a national long-distance network of around 1,100 route km that connects 22 towns and cities and offers connectivity into key data centres and wholesale internet peering points in London. Kcom will hold on to its local network assets in Hull and East Yorkshire and use the proceeds from the sale to reduce debt. CityFibre said it has agreed an underwritten share offering to raise GBP 80 million for the purchase. The cost of Kcom's assets is 45 percent less than building its own long-distance network, CityFibre said. CityFibre agreed to provide Kcom with access to the national network for another 15 years, at a minimum cost of GBP 5 million per year.
