Public service revolted over the Howard government's attempt to sell the ICON communication system

The Australian Public Service revolted against its political bosses the last time an attempt was made to sell its secure communications system in Canberra, former insiders have revealed. The Howard government made a second attempt to sell off the ICON network in 2001, under intense lobbying from private sector telcos led by Telstra, who believed the system was depriving them of more than $100 million in bills each year to government departments.

Patrick Howard, consulting engineer for nondestructive testing and measurement at GE Aviation in Cincinnati, OH, has received the Charles W. Briggs Award from ASTM Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing. Howard was honored for his continuous and outstanding contributions to the standards development work of E07 through its subcommittees, sections, and task groups. An ASTM member since 2004, he chairs the E07 Subcommittee on Digital Imaging and Communication in Nondestructive Evaluation.

Howard Hughes Corp. gets $350M loan from lenders including First Hawaiian, American Savings banks

The $350 million loan will be used to develop two condo towers standing 36 and 38 floors tall on Oahu's south shore. The note is part of a larger $600 million construction loan for Dallas-based The Howard Hughes Corp. The Howard Hughes Corp. , which is based in Dallas, has received a $350 million loan from five lenders, including two Hawaii banks, for two condo towers in Honolulu, part of a larger $600 million loan for the high-rise development.
