Tasks and Responsibilities LongTerm Planning Support for Rosetta Support the creation of observation sequences from the requests provided by the PI teams Using the applicable software, develop a proposal for a schedule of observations. Expected output Support to the preparation of specific science operations, which fulfill the Master science plan MediumTerm Planning MTP support for Rosetta Iterate on the collection of the mediumterm planning inputs from the PI teams Using the ASPEN, EPS, MAPPS and other software tools, check the PI input for correctness Support, where required, specific PI teams in the generation of their MTP level products Support the creation of and delivery to the MOC of the consolidated operational requests in the form of Pointing Requests PTR and Payload Operational Request POR files Support any iterationsupdates of the operational requests with the RMOC Expected output Implementation mediumterm plans consisting of Pointing Requests PTR and Instrument Timelines ITL. Documented process and planning files storage in GIT MTP planning files delivery to the Rosetta Mission Operations Center. ShortTerm Planning STP support for Rosetta Iterate on the collection of the shortterm planning input from the PI teams Using the EPS, MAPPS and other software tools, check the PI input for correctness Support, where required, specific PI teams in the generation of their STP level products Support the creation of and delivery to the RMOC of the consolidated operational requests in the form of Payload Operational Request POR files Support any iterationsupdates of the operational requests with the RMOC Expected output Generation validation of STP Payload Operational Request files to be sent to the RMOC Archive support for Rosetta Interact with the Downlink Science Operations Manager and Project Scientist to ensure that Rosetta archive needs are addressed in the area of general PDS and PSA software development. Such interactions shall include the provision of requirements. Interact with the PSA Software developer to check the correct implementation of user requirements Aid in the validation of PSA software specific to the Rosetta mission, including DVAL, PRVV APC, Archie interface. Interact with the PDS for issues specific to the Rosetta mission archive Interact with and provide support to the PI teams in the area of archive product generation, delivery validation Support the archive product validation process including reviews. Expected output Validated archive deliveries from the PI teams Support to the archive process It is foreseen that the Key Person may have to travel to ESA establishments and PI institutes, approximately 46 times per year. Requirements The Key Person should have an Engineering PhD or Masters Degree in a relevant field and have minimum 4 years of experience. Knowledge of astronomical instrumentation, acquired through astronomical instrument hardware development andor intensive astronomical data reduction exercise. Experience and understanding of farinfrared instruments is a distinct advantage. Experience in interacting with the scientific community. An interest in performing science research with the mission data is considered a plus. The spacecraft is expected to be launched in July 2017, and after a three month commissioning phase it will cruise for three and a half years until the proper orbital geometry is achieved. The nominal mission is expected to last three and half years more with a post operations phase of two additional years. The Solar Orbiter Science Operations Centre at ESAC is responsible for the development of the Science Ground Segment SGS following the Science Implementation Requirements provided by the Project Scientist which covers all the operational activities originating from the mission science objectives defined by the Science Working Team SWT, including interactions with the Instrument Teams and the Mission Operations Centre at ESOC. Specific Service tasks Coordination and monitoring of all data handling and archiving activities during the prelaunch preparation phase, including support to the development of the low latency data processing pipelines and auxiliary data products. Definition of the science data generation, validation and archiving plan. Definition of archiving guidelines. Support to the Instrument Teams on science data product definition. Support the detailed specification of the science data contents and structure requirements. Support the definition and implementation, including validation, of the SOC archiving subsystem, including the mirroring interface with NASA. Tracking deliveries of science data products according to agreed schedule. Validation of all data deliverables from the Instrument Teams and SOC team. Ingestion of all data deliverables into the Solar Orbiter mission archive. Verification of the completeness, integrity and accessibility of all data ingested into the archive. Support to endusers. Output and Service Performance Monitoring ESA will formally define the service delivery in terms of delivery times, performance targets and similar measurable parameters Key Performance Indicators. This shall be agreed with the applicant and shall be assessed, and modified as needed, during regular progress meetings typically monthly. The applicant shall manage the service provision and provide ESA with the necessary data and corresponding evidence. The applicant shall be measured and assessed on the basis of Archiving guidelines and plan documents. Data handling and archiving activities reports. System requirements documents. System test specifications and validation reports. Science data validation and ingestion reports. Interactions Free interaction is expected with the members of the Solar Orbiter Science Operations Working Group SOWG, its Data Analysis Working Group DAWG splinter, and with software engineers in the Instrument teams. Frequent interactions are expected to take place with the SOC manager, the SOC team members and within the team of other service providers working on Solar Orbiter. Also, frequent interactions are expected to take place with the Computers Support Group and the Science Archives Team at ESAC. Specific Qualification Requirements The service to be provided requires that the personnel should possess a university background in a scientific or technical subject and relevant professional experience of at least 5 years in planetary science data handling and archiving. Reflecting the scientific aspects of the service to bne provided, a research level qualification PhD or equivalent would be a distinct advantage. In particular, the following experience is required for the applicant Experience in data handling and archiving in the solar physics or heliospheric disciplines. Experience with the ESAC archives. Scientific experience in solar physics or heliospheric physics. Experience with solar system geometry and ancillary information tools SPICE. Experience with software programming and scripting languages IDL, Python,, etc.. Experience with XMLbased documents. Other Information It is expected that the service is provided predominantly onsite at ESAC with the possibility of offsite support periods to be agreed between ESA and the applicant. This work package covers software design, definition, implementation and maintenance service support to Solar Orbiter Science Ground Segment development, operations and maintenance at ESAC, including the science operations planning system, the lowlatency data generation and visualization system, the auxiliary data products generation system and also supports the archiving of science data products. Specific Service tasks Generic tasks native to Software Development and Maintenance Develop and maintain modules, applications and tools specific to product generation framework and quality control framework Ensure timely delivery of SW releases and relative increments Perform SW architectural design as needed Prepare and maintain SW documentation. Develop and maintain unit test harnesses Report on progress and problem areas Participate in the Configuration Control Boards applicable to the development Followingup and tracking the correction and resolution of problem reports Implement approved software enhancement requests Tasks specific to Support of Solar Orbiter SOC Development and Maintenance Develop, implement and maintain the science operations planning system. Develop, implement and maintain a low latency data production system integrating data processing pipelines supplied by the Principal Investigators. Develop, implement and maintain the auxiliary data productions system. Support the archiving of science data products provided by the Principal Investigators. Organise development tasks as needed. Tasks specific to validation and operation of the Solar Orbiter SOC system Deploy and configure new versions of the SOC subsystems. Test and validate new deliveries of software, including regression testing. Test and validate external deliveries of data processing pipelines. Report on progress and problem areas. Participates in the Configuration Control Boards applicable to the development and maintenance. Communicate with SOC team at ESAC and experts in the Principal Investigator teams. Output and Service Performance Monitoring ESA will formally define the service delivery in terms of delivery times, performance targets and similar measurable parameters Key Performance Indicators. This shall be agreed with the applicant and shall be assessed, and modified as needed, during regular progress meetings typically monthly. The applicant shall manage the service provision and provide ESA with the necessary data and corresponding evidence. The applicant shall be measured and assessed on the basis of Periodic software releases including at least annual major releases of the software, interleaved with minor versions when applicable Software architecture, design documentation Software documentation interfacing to user as well as developer Software source and object code Software unit tests with an approved test coverage Definition of Interface Control Documents ICDs and file interchange formats with external coordination units Attendance in approved groups and meetings Participation in software integration, validation, product validation and verification campaigns Progress reports Interactions Free interaction is expected with the members of the Solar Orbiter Data Analysis Working Group DAWG and with software engineers in the Principal Investigator teams. Frequent interactions are expected to take place with the SOC manager, the SOC team members and within the team of other applicants working on Solar Orbiter. Also, frequent interactions are expected to take place with the Computers Support Group and the Science Archives Team at ESAC. Specific Qualification Requirements The service to be provided requires that the personnel should possess a university background in a scientific or technical subject and relevant professional experience of at least 5 years in software development. In particular, possess the following experience, knowledge and proficiency in ECSS standards for software development. Software architecture and design. Ability to understand the different subsystems as a whole integrated systems. Virtual machine management and configuration. Software repositories Subversion, GIT. Databases and data processing. Scientific data formats used by the Heliophysics and Space Physics communities FITS, CDF. Data processing pipelines in solar system or astronomy space projects. Modern programming languages CC, Java, Python. Scripting languages. Operating system in common use in Heliophysics and space science linuxUnixMacOS, Windows. Coordination of a small team of software developers. For any applicant experience in interacting with the science community would be an advantage. The selected provider must be willing render the service in a team environment and to travel. Good interpersonal and communication skills are an advantage. The applicant should be comfortable in an international working environment and be fluent in written and spoken English, one of the official languages of ESA.
