Research Fellow Systems and Avonics Engineer II

University of Surrey Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences Surrey Space Centre Research Fellow Systems and Avonics Engineer II The Surrey Space Centre SSC, part of the Department of Electronic Engineering, is a worldclass institution for space research. The successful candidate will join one of the largest space systems groups in Europe under the guidance of Professor Vaios Lappas. One of SSCs projects is RemoveDebris, expected to demonstrate the first successful capture of debris in space utilising a net and harpoon. The Research Fellow is expected to additionally work on other related ESA, EU and industrially funded space projects. This 12 month post ideally requires somebody with 3 years experience in CubeSat microsatellite bussubsystem design. The candidate will have good knowledge of ADCS AOCS, communication systems, EPS power systems, solar panels, OBCs, thermal systems, systems integration and ideally will have worked on an active satellite mission in this capacity. In addition, the candidate will have knowledge of procurement, manufacture, experimental setup, testing and some knowledge on assembly, integration, testing AIT. The successful candidate will join one of the largest space systems groups in Europe under the guidance of Prof. Vaios Lappas. One of SSCs projects is RemoveDEBRIS, expected to demonstrate the first successful capture of debris in space utilising a net and harpoon. The Research Fellow is expected to additionally work on other related ESA, EU and industrially funded space projects. This 24 month post ideally requires somebody with 2 years experience in systems engineeringproject management for CubeSats microsatellites or a similar area. The candidate will have prior experience of managing projects and ideally will have worked on an active small satellite satellite mission. They will have good knowledge of planning, scheduling, resource allocation, interfacing and directing project partners, communication and dissemination. From a technical perspective the candidate will be capable of performing high level tradeoffs for system design and will have some knowledge of procurement, launcher selection, launch process, manufacture, assembly, integration, testing AIT, electrical and mechanical subsystems. The Research Fellow is expected to additionally work on other related ESA, EU and industrially funded space projects. This 24 month post ideally requires somebody with 3 years experience in mechanical design for CubeSats microsatellites or a similar area. The candidate will have good knowledge of structural design, a significant experience in CAD modelling and ideally will have worked on an active satellite mission in this capacity. Experimental structural skills are required as a higher priority to theoretical structural analysis knowledge. In addition, the candidate will have knowledge of procurement, manufacture, experimental setup, testing and experience with assembly, integration, testing AIT, FEA. NREL Research Fellow Howard Branz Named Fellow of American Physical Society

Howard Branz, a solar energy scientist at NREL, has been elected a fellow of the American Physical Society for seminal research on thin film silicon: defects, metastability, growth processes, nano-structuring, and solar cells. Branz is recognized worldwide for his research in nano-structured anti-reflection silicon, solar hydrogen production and defects, and diffusion in semiconductors.
