Instrument Engineer Space and Atmospheric Physics Group, Department of Physics South Kensington Campus Salary Range 33,590 41,540 per annum Fixed term up to 1 year with the possibility of extension We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated candidate to fill the post of Instrument Engineer within the Space and Atmospheric Physics Group at Imperial College London. Solar Orbiter is a European Space Agency ESA scientific satellite due for launch in 2017 and set to explore the nearSun environment by flying closer to the Sun than ever before. Imperial College London has been selected as the Principal Investigator of the magnetometer, a key instrument on the satellite, which will be designed and built by the team at Imperials Space Magnetometer Laboratory. The project is now entering an intensive build phase and Imperial College London will be delivering instruments to ESA in the period 201415. The post holder will actively support the build and test phase of the magnetometer instrument, taking responsibility for the performance of one of the electronics boards either the sensor electronics or instrument controller unit depending on the experience of the successful candidate. This will involve testing and troubleshooting the performance and interfaces of all iterations of these electronics specifically the Electrical, Qualification and finally Flight models, the Electrical and Flight models will be delivered to ESA. The post holder will ensure component procurement is complete and component delivery is on schedule and will plan assembly, population and test of printed circuit boards, including the writing of test procedures and reports and analysis of magnetometer data. The post holder will support the design of the instrument controller unit by writing software to control the instrument and process the magnetometer data. The post holder will attend the calibration and verification tests for the assembled magnetometer, travelling to locations within the UK and other European countries, accompanied by other team members. The post holder will undertake magnetometer instrument development activities and may also be required to represent the Magnetometer team to ESA as a representative on Solar Orbiter working groups. This post will involve a high degree of teamwork and interfacing with other institutions and organisations. A degree in engineering, physics, or a closely related discipline or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience is essential. Also required is experience with analogue andor electronics design, test and debug. Experience of working in a team to deliver a technical project within a required deadline is essential. VN1317 As part of our Low Earth Orbit Division, you will be part of the EPSSG team from preliminary design through to end of system commissioning, and may also provide support to other projects such as EPS, GMES Sentinel3 and JasonCS.
