Job Description Astroscale is seeking to employ an experienced and motivated Power Systems Engineer at our facility based in Harwell, UK. This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic and rapidly growing company seeking to make a positive contribution to the growing problem of orbital debris that endangers mankinds continued use of space as an asset. This role will allow the right candidate to shape solutions for our missions. Whilst the candidate will primarily work in the UK, they will interact extensively with a larger team in Astroscales Japan Office and may expect to be required to travel to Tokyo as needed in support of Astroscale projects and operations. Responsibilities Lead development and design activities for Power subsystems on Astroscale spacecraft derive and maintain subsystem requirements define and develop subsystem architecture perform tradeoff analysis of hardware software solutions developing power budgets define FMECA and FDIR processes Coordinate with other teams at subsystem and at system level to define ConOps, ICDs, development and verification plans. Plan, prepare, and conduct subsystems and system level verification tests, including environmental testing. Interact with partners and suppliers for the provision of power system equipment. Support procurement engineers with specification, tradeoff and selection of power system equipment. Participate in review of the deliverables in support of the project milestones. Essential Skills experience Diploma bachelor or masters degree in electrical engineering or relevant engineeringscience discipline. 5 years of commercial experience of designing and testing power subsystems for satellites. Understanding of solar panel specification, manufacturing process, handling and testing. Experience sizing, procuring, testing and integrating satellite batteries and an awareness the storage handling requirements for batteries. Experience in constructing grounding philosophies and grounding diagrams for spacecraft architectures. Experience of designing and testing EGSE for the purposes of powering the satellite during the AIT phase. Good understanding of spacecraft mission lifecycle and milestones e.g. MDR, PDR, CDR, etc. Good understanding of system engineering managing requirements through the full project lifecycle. Desired Skills Experience Demonstrable experience of spacecraft design lifecycle at all stages from initial concept to design, test, and operations. Operational experience of power systems on spacecraft missions. Experience of analysis radiation tolerances and knowledge of radiation hardness assurance for Low Earth Orbit applications. Whilst the working language across all Astroscale divisions is English, proficiency in spoken andor written Japanese would be considered an asset. Objective To provide specialist support in power electronics and associated technology, in particular in the area of Digital Control of power converters, to spacecraft projects within the Power Management Distribution Section. Responsibilities Duties The duties of the Power Management Distribution Secion The design, development and test of spacecraft power systems for onboard applications. This work encompasses the definition of centralised power systems having overall power levels up to 25 kilowatts, together with their interfaces with respect to solar arrays and batteries, the attendant power distributionprotection equipment and pyrotechnic activation functions. Detailed tasks include the overall system design necessary for the development of fault tolerant power control and distribution concepts, the detailed design of the power regulators and the identificationuse of tools and methods for ensuring dependable design and verification. The development of simulation blocks for system analysis batteries, solar cells arrays, power control and distribution units useful for the independent evaluation of critical power and energy budgets in support to running projects of the Agency. Support to laboratory activities concerning design and development or verification of circuits for power management and distribution solar array and battery conversion electronics, power distribution and protection electronics, power conversion for generic and specific purposes, including redundancy and protections. Active involvement in critical RD activities support by simulation, worst case analysis and laboratory testing of the overall system or of the most critical subunits. Assisting to the development and validation of worst case simulation blocks for electrical equipment analysis converters, shunt regulators, current limiters, protections, critical telemetry or telecommand functions useful for the independent check of the most critical equipment functionality and performances, in support to all programmes reviews where the power conditioning section is involved. The development and verification of high voltage design technologies and associated power converters, suitable for application as Electronic Power Conditioners EPCs for specialized spacecraft payloads such as Travelling Wave Tube Assemblies TWTAs and Electric Propulsion Concepts. The duties of the Power Conditioning Engineer will include but are not limited to Providing specialist support in the area of Digital Control of power converters in space systems, with respect to design, development and test, using microcontroller programming of FPGAs in VHDL and GaN semiconductors. Activities in the domain of power conditioning electronics, utilising proven handson knowledge of the circuit design of such systems.
