BepiColombo Software Engineer

Aurora is an established supplier of skilled manpower to ESA and in particular at ESTEC and ESAC. Aurora has the opportunity to expand our support within the Science and Robotic Exploration Directorate DSRE. Aurora currently has a team of 20 engineers and scientists at ESAC. Overview The work is to support the ESA BepiColombo SGS Science Ground Segment during its final preparation for operations and the operational phase. BepiColombo is a joint ESAJAXA mission to Mercury. The mission comprises two spacecraft, ESAs Mercury Planetary Orbiter MPO and JAXAs Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter MMO. The two spacecraft will be launched in July 2016 with arrival at Mercury in early 2024. The activities of the MPO SGS include Science Operations Planning of the MPO payload, science data processing and data distribution to the instrument teams, quick look data analysis of science data and archiving of data in the BepiColombo science archive. The MPO SGS has interfaces with the Operational Ground Segment OGS at ESOC, the MMO JAXA Sagamihara Space Operations Centre SSOC, the MPO Instrument Teams and the Scientific Community. The SGS is based at the European Space Astronomy Centre ESAC in Villanueva de la Canada, Madrid, Spain. The job is intended to provide a number of specialised services to support ESA in developing science operations systems and tools, including System engineering and architectural design activities, including operating plans and procedures, Designing, developing, implementing, testing, deploying, operating and maintaining software tools and systems, e.g. Observation proposal handling, mission planning and quicklook systems, parts of which may be distributed to the community User support tools Interactive analysis and calibration systems, to be distributed as needed to the community for data reduction and analysis Data processing pipelines Scientific data archives and interfacing these to the virtual observatory. Scientific and technical WWW systems to support Science Operations Centre, Science Ground Segment and the scientific community Contribute to the definition of Interface Control Documents ICDs and file interchange formats with external coordination units Organise and perform end to end system testing with the scientific communities Contribute to the maintenance of the overall system, including configuration control and versioning Specific Service Tasks a Main Service Tasks Responsibilities The main area of activity will be SW development for the implementation of the Data Processing Subsystem DPS within the BepiColombo Science Control System at the Science Ground Segment. The activity will also imply integration, operation and maintenance of the Data Processing infrastructure, components and tools. b Service Work Package Descriptions and Scope The service to be provided will encompass contributing to the requirements definition, design, implementation and testing of the BepiColombo Science Control System BSCS with specific focus on the Data Processing side of the BSCS. As part of the service the following main activities will have to be carried out Develop and maintain the BepiColombo Data Processing System DPS. The DPS activities will comprise the implementation of the pipelines under SGS development responsibility, and the integration within the BSCS of the pipelines developed and delivered to SGS by the different instrument teams. The DPS activities will also include the development and implementation of the data processing monitoring and control facilities and the different data transfer mechanisms. Participate in the development and maintenance of the other subsystems of the BSCS. These subsystems cover the acquisition of data from ESOC OGS, the science planning and the quality control, and the interfaces for data ingestion and retrieval tofrom the BepiColombo Archive Core System BACS. Contribute to the maintenance of the already deployed BSCS SW Contribute to the maintenance operation of the BSCS software development environment Specific qualification requirements University degree preferably Masters in a scientific or technical subject. Relevant professional experience of at least 5 years in general software development and software engineering with good understanding of space operations. In particular, possess the following experiences, knowledge and proficiency in Programming languages Java, IDL and C. Scripting in Unix environments. Graphical User Interface GUI development and maintenance. Development of data structures, accessing them locally and from relational databases. Administration of relational Databases, MySQL and ORACLE. Provision and maintenance of tests harnesses. Development of Web Applications, experience with Apache Tomcat technologies. Knowledge of XML and experience in mapping XML files to Java Objects and viceversa is an advantage. Knowledge of inter process communication is an advantage. Knowledge of scientific processing and data analysis is an advantage. Science mission planning and instrument commanding is an advantage Experience with configuration and version control tools, SVN, GIT. Experience with software building tools MAVEN, Hudson, Jenkins. ECSS standards for software development. ECSS Packet Utilization Standard PUS services SCOS2000 Mission Information Base MIB structures. In addition applicants should Have good communications skills. Be able to document their work. Be willing to travel regularly to ESA establishments andor Instrument teams institutes. Be comfortable in an international working environment and be fluent in English a high level of written and spoken English is essential. Legal and Security Requirements All applicants must be legally allowed to work in Spain without the need to obtain a work visa. Only European Union citizens can be employed by Aurora in Spain. Applicants are required to provide a copy of their passport and degree certificate. Aurora will validate the Degree with the issuing University and provide evidence to ESA. Prior to issuing a letter of employment the applicant shall provide to Aurora a recent official document declaring that they are of good conduct from the country where currently resident. Location The work will be performed at the ESAC, the European Space Astronomy Centre, at Villafranca del Castillo, near Madrid, Spain. Contract You will be registered for both social security and tax in Spain. The standard working hours are 40 per week. There are 12 public holidays and an additional 29 annual days holiday.
