According to Winter Maintenance Operations Survey, 23 reporting states spent approximately $1.131 billion from October 2014 to mid-April 2015 to pre-treat, plow, or spread chemicals and other materials on roadways to keep them open and operating safely this winter season. Survey also found that state employees and contractors logged 8 million work hours, used fleet of more than 24,000 state snow plows and trucks, and used approximately 6 million tons of salt.

Pioneer Natural Resources posted a net income loss of $5 million in the first quarter as low oil prices and severe winter weather hampered production in the Permian Basin, according to earnings released Tuesday afternoon. The company's net income loss is down 102 percent from the first quarter of 2014 when Pioneer earned a cool $184 million.

More than 250 people were yesterday trapped on a plane at a military airbase for more than six hours after wild weather and thunderstorms forced the landing in Auckland to be aborted. The pilots and cabin crew were then barred from flying because they had been in the air too long, forcing the airline to charter an Air New Zealand eight-seater plane to ferry a replacement crew to make the return flight to Auckland.

Syngenta sales miss forecasts as U.S. winter bites

Syngenta AG on Friday reported first-quarter sales that failed to meet expectations as the strength of the dollar and a severe winter in the U.S. curbed demand for its crop-protection products. Basel-based Syngenta, which makes agricultural products designed to improve crop productivity, said sales fell 14% to $4.02 billion from $4.68 billion in the same period a year earlier.
