Summary A degree educated Software Engineer is required to support the Science Operations Science Archive Team SAT based in Villafranca, Spain. Objective Within the Science Archives Team, the service to be provided requires that personnel are usually dedicated to a specific archive project, taking care of design, implementation, operations and evolutive maintenance of the archive software systems data repository and database products metadata, middletier applications, data distribution and interoperability, user and scriptable interfaces. As the archives software systems share a common technical framework, service personnel assigned to one archive project can move to another archive project, ensuring easier and efficient knowledge transfer. The selected service personnel must be willing to operate in a team environment and to travel. Display good interpersonal and communication skills. Support to Science Operations Euclid SCJ2635

Summary The ESAC team is forming the Euclid Science Operations Centre SOC, which will build the Science Ground Segment in collaboration with the Euclid Consortium. Objective The Euclid SOC will execute and monitor the sky survey, perform initial processing on the science telemetry stream and provide the Euclid archive. The Euclid SOC will work with the Euclid Consortium in the area of instrument operations coordination. Responsibilities Duties The engineer will work on the survey planning system, which will plan the Euclid Sky Survey and the instrument commanding system, which will be in use during the operational phases of the mission. The service to be provided by the engineer chosen for this position will encompass contributing to the system requirements definition, design, implementation and testing of the survey planning and instrument command generation systems to be used within the Euclid Science Ground Segment. The engineer will develop prototype code for the survey planning and instrument commanding tools. The development will be in done in Java to enable reuse of existing code from other missions located at ESAC. The engineer will work in the Engineering team of the Euclid SOC under the System Engineer. They will interface with the major stakeholders of these systems the Sky Survey Working Group, SOC Calibration and Operations Team, Instrument Operations Teams and Euclid Mission Operations Centre. Qualifications Experience Specific qualification requirements University degree or equivalent in computer science or related fields Basic educational or workacquired knowledge of astronomyphysics and standard numerical methods and techniques would be a strong asset A working understanding of space operations would be highly desirable Essential Skills Specific knowledge is required in the following areas Strong software engineering skills in Java Science mission planning and instrument commanding Spacecraft attitude and orbit and the corresponding standard Flight Dynamics interfaces ECSS standards for software development Desirable Skills In addition knowledge of the following would be beneficial ECSS Packet Utilisation Standard PUS services SCOS2000 Mission Information Base MIB structure Scripting in a Unix environment e.g. Python Qualities Experience in interacting with the science community would be an advantage Must be willing to operate in a team environment and to travel Be selfmotivated and be able to work independently. Aurora is an established supplier of skilled manpower to ESA and in particular at ESTEC and ESAC. Aurora has the opportunity to expand our support within the Science and Robotic Exploration Directorate DSRE. Aurora currently has a team of 20 engineers and scientists at ESAC. The Aurora Service Site Manager, Hugo Costa is working in the Archives team. Overview Within the Science Operations Departments overall responsibility for scientific operations development and execution for astronomy missions, the Science Archives and Computer Engineering Unit carries in particular the role of developing science archives, providing easy access to mission data for the scientific community worldwide. A Science Archives Team in ESAC works on various archive projects ISO, XMMNewton, INTEGRAL, HERSCHEL, ROSETTA, MARS EXPRESS, SMART1, VENUS EXPRESS, SOHO, Planck and more to come. All mission archives are online via the World Wide Web, with data distribution usually being done via FTP. Modular and flexible multitier and clientserver architecture together with the use of an objectoriented approach, Java and XML allows configurability and reuse of systems across projects. Furthermore, ESA, through the ESAC Science Archives Team is playing a greater role in the Virtual Observatory VO worldwide to position itself as THE main VO actor for all European spacebased astronomical data. A VO is a network of interoperating data archives and software tools that use the connectivity provided by the Internet and in future the GRID to form a scientific research environment in which astronomical research programs can be conducted. The vast astronomical archives and databases around the world, together with analysis tools and computational services, are linked together into an integrated facility, not only connecting astronomical data centres and providers but also providing collective capabilities beyond those possible in any individual archive.
