Objective The engineer is expected to support projects can be during any phase andor programmes for studies on new concepts. The specific activities may relate to simulations and analysis of observations and products, to Level 1b andor Level 2 product and algorithm aspects and to data analysis for validation and mission performance during phase E of an Earth observation mission. The specific analysis can be related to satellite or dedicated suborbital mission campaign concepts Responsibilities Duties The engineer shall support the SMOS mission scientist, the SMOS mission manager, and the STSE program manager. The SMOS specific tasks include Support the exploitation studies funded through the SMOS project. This includes the contract with ECMWF on data assimilation. Support the preparation of SMOS publications and presentations. Support the implementation of new studies related to the SMOS mission. Support the analysis of SVRT results obtained over oceans and DOMEC. Support future work on the SMOS L2 ocean salinity processor. The STSE specific tasks include 1. Support to EOPSM a. Preparation of SoW and implementation of SMOS Ice II b. Support to preparation and implementation of SMOS Permafrost CCN c. SMOS NN 3 month CCN 2. Support to EOPSA I. Qualifications Experience The engineer shall be a senior scientistengineer ideally holding a PhD in geophysical sciences e.g. oceanography, meteorology, physics, mathematics or engineering with a strong background in satellite remote sensing using Lband radiometry. This includes handson experience with SMOS L1 and L2 data processing and a good knowledge of the corresponding application areas. Furthermore, knowledge of and experience with the STSE programme is mandatory. Technical skills shall include programming and a good knowledge of relevant software packages. Essential Skills A good knowledge of the English language is expected. The applicant shall be able to work both autonomously and as a part of a team. SMOS Payload Operations Engineer

This post is classified in the A2A4 grade band of the Coordinated Organisations salary scale. LOCATION Initially ESAC, Villanueva de la Caada, Madrid Spain with a later transfer to ESOC, Darmstadt Germany. DUTIES The postholder will be assigned to the SMOS Payload Operations Team. The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity SMOS mission was launched in November 2009, and is currently under extension until end 2016. The Payload Operations Engineer will report to the Head of the Earth Explorer Management Office, based in ESOC. The incumbent will carry out payload operations activities, which include the following tasks preparing and executing the SMOS payload mission planning and operations during the mission, including anomaly recovery and management and coordinating the operations as needed with the CNES Mission Operations Team maintaining the Flight Operations Procedures, Payload Data Base and Payload Onboard Operations Procedures during the mission assisting the Head of the Earth Explorer Management Office in the management of the Flight Operations Segment maintenance contract, including any evolution of the ground systems to ensure the continuation of the mission participation in Quality Working Groups and workshops to further enhance the mission, supporting the ESRIN Mission Manager interfacing with the CNES Mission Operations Team, and industry for technical matters related to any anomalies or payload operations evolution as a result of satellite systems degradation providing training to and technically managing the other engineers provided by industrial contract working as part of the SMOS payload operations team. QUALIFICATIONS Applicants for this post should have a university degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering or Physics, together with good professional experience in spacecraft andor operational applications. Indepth knowledge of the SMOS mission is essential. Candidates should be systemminded, be able to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team, be selfmotivateddisciplined and be results oriented. Experience with Payload Operations is highly desirable and Platform Operations is an asset. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these two languages is required together with a working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of another member state language is an asset.
