ROLE DESCRIPTION SUMMARY As the Communications Satellite Technician, Represented, you will provide firstlevel technical support for all customer service teleport operation, installation, and maintenance processes at the Woodbine earth station. You will be responsible for the monitoring, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance for satellite communications equipment at Earth Stations located throughout the Western Hemisphere. You will be responsible for maintaining service throughput for unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise line services, inflight internet, and several humanitarian missions. This is a union represented position. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES KEY RESULT AREAS Fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of the radiofrequency RF equipment used in largescale satellite downlink and uplink operations such as waveguide assemblies, cables, and fiberoptic systems Performs componentlevel troubleshooting required on HighPower Amplifiers HPA, fiberoptic systems, upconverters, downconverters, RF switching units, Antenna Control Units ACUs, LowNoise Amplifiers LNAs and LowNoise Block Downconverters LNBs Performs maintenance and repair on large transmitreceive and receiveonly satellite antenna systems System level and bench level electronics troubleshooting experience Must be able to perform shift work as a cohesive part of a team and with minimal supervision The ability to read and interpret schematics, assemble wave guide systems, efficiently utilize sophisticated test equipment, perform documentation tasks, and successfully interact with management engineers is a must Perform moderately complex onsite installation, preventative maintenance and routine repair of electronic and electromechanical equipment such as updown converters, HPAs, fiber optic subsystems, LNALNBs, antennas, IP and Baseband equipment modems, multiplexers, DVB and Broadband technology platforms and video systems Maintains, monitors, and configures High Throughput Satellite HTS equipment both at Woodbine and at all HTS sites Troubleshoot equipment issues remotely, provide instruction via email or phone, and test repaired equipment through remote Monitoring and Control MC equipment Apply electrical and electronic theory and related knowledge, usually under the direction of engineering staff, to build, repair, calibrate, and modify electrical components, circuitry, controls, and machinery Install, calibrate, and maintain integrated computercommunications systems consoles, simulators, and other data acquisition, test, and measurement instruments and equipment to launch, track, position, and evaluate air and space vehicles COMPETENCIES Customer service Prioritization Problemsolving Team player Flexibility Selfmotivated Written and verbal communication Global cultural awareness QUALIFICATION EXPERIENCE Required Bachelors degree in RF Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications or related field experience can be substituted for education Ability to work rotating shifts day, evening, and night, weekends, holidays, and on call Ability to lift 50lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces Experience with SATCOM, broadband, telecommunications, digital video, HTS, and TCPIP Ability to read RF and Electrical Drawings Preferred Experience working as satellite communication technician Experience working at a teleport or earth station Experience creating RF drawings and diagrams Ability to solder small components, wires, and cable connectors WHATS IN IT FOR YOU? The Telecommunication Satellite Payload Engineer will be responsible for the management of activities devoted to the development of satellite payload technology and products under the responsibility of the Payload Technology Section. Tasks and Activities The scope of work will include Initiating, monitoring and controlling space segment technology and product development activities for satellite communications under the ARTES Core Competitiveness CC and other ARTES programme lines, with a focus on digital communication technologies. Liaising with the Procurement Department, the Strategic Programme Line Managers and other relevant Departments of ESA as necessary to fulfil this role. Supporting activities of the Ground Segment Section and the creation and implementation of ARTES partnership projects. Skills and Experience The following skills and experience are mandatory Technical Competences Experience in managing technology development activities carried out by industry for commercial satellite communication. Knowledge of ESA and industrial development, verification and procurement processes. Knowledge of satellite communication system architectures, products and market. Experience in the specification, design, development and testing of at least one of the following digital signal processors, communication modems, digital andor mixed signal ASICs, software defined radios. Behavioural Competences Communication Results Orientation Planning and Organisation Teamwork Stakeholder Relationship Management. Strong negotiation skills and contractsubcontract management experience. Experience in space segment technology and equipment as well as subsystem design and development.
