You will join the MP Operations France department and will take over the interfaces between Materials and Processes Engineering and AIT, mainly at the level of glued assemblies and their behaviour in space environment UV radiation, cryogenics, heat cycling.By managing the interface between MP and AIT, you will ensure that the Materials and Processes used in AIT conform to design work. On the MP side, this involves management of the AIT technologies and procedures database, management of the AIT Material Process Control Board and of the Declared Material ListDeclared Process List, along with responding to major anomalies. This position involves frequent clean room and laboratory work, along with numerous contacts with external laboratories, agencies ESA, CNES and academic partners. This role will involve travel for business twice per month 1 week twice per year abroad and therefore you must be able to travel accordingly.As the successful candidate you will be able to demonstrate the following skills Holder of an Engineering degree or university equivalent, ideally in chemistry andor materials science, Initial materials and processes experience in the space or related restrictive field aeronautics, motor industry, etc., Knowledge of glued assemblies, along with related analytical and laboratory means, Knowledge of analytical and test techniques, including laboratory means, Auxiliary knowledge wiring, contamination and cleanliness, thermics would be an advantage, Advanced level in English and French, fluency in a 3rd language would be an advantage. For one of our main customers ESAESTEC, we are currently looking for Engineering Project Support for Metallic Materials Processes for Spacecraft and Launchers, to operate within the Directorate of Technical and Quality Management. Tasks and Responsibilities o Act as Project focal point with a materials and processes expert role for defined ESA projects, reporting to the Projects Product Assurance and Safety Managers and coordinating with other domains in the Materials and Components Technology Division o Carry out Materials and Processes reviews, Materials and Processes Control Boards MPCBs and participate as PA Board Member in ESA Programme reviews milestones o Work on key supply chains impacting Space Product development and manufacturing of ESA main Projects while also actively define means of intervention towards major industrial players o Perform laboratory evaluations and assessment of a variety of materials e. g. aluminium, titanium, steel, ceramics, glasses, etc. as well as joining techniques and repair welding, bonding, brazing, etc., printed circuit boards and electronic assembly o Support major NonConformances Review Board activities, perform failure analysis using a variety of laboratory tools including acoustic microscopy, optical microscopy, confocal microscopy, XRD, XRay, etc. and drafting of related reports Participate to ESA Audit of key industrial players, representing the materials and processes function. Experience and education o University Engineering Degree in Materials Science and significant practical experience in an aerospace or related industry o Strong experience in the RD area and technology development in the field of metallic materials and related manufacturing processes and a good knowledge of materials process technology with a good understanding of physics and chemistry o Knowledge of ProgrammeProject management and control technique, method and tools together with the capability to work independently and have confidence to deal directly with customers, in person or by telephone and to interface with ESA staff in high level positions o Demonstrated ability to analyse and summarise complex information, capability of identifying priority actions and handle high workload. Specific Competence Requirements o Several years of experience in project support activities including material physical and chemical laboratory investigations with particular emphasis on the task descriptions defined above. o Familiarity with relevant ECSS standards and general space product assurance requirements and processes. Design and perform nonstandard tests to meet special space project requirements as well as develop in situ analysis techniques. Recording sample properties or condition during and after test, accurately and legibly. Checking on test equipment performance and reporting any anomalies or faults. Supporting the inclusion of results in internal databases. Maintenance of the relevant test equipment. The Contractor shall ensure that the equipment under his responsibility is kept in an operational state and shall ensure that all necessary routine calibration and maintenance activities are carried out. Analyse the behaviour of materials and their resistance to the space environment. Performing space environmental simulation to assess effects on materials. Providing expert support for materials and process reviews as requested by formal reviews of space missions. Producing clear and professional reports as specified for the task. Supporting the inclusion of results in internal databases. Interaction with internal and external customers on a professional level. To successfully perform the above mentioned tasks, the following background experience is required The holder shall have a university degree in materials science or a related engineering discipline with a good working knowledge of materials process technology and a good understanding of physics and chemistry. Experience in one or more of the following techniques would be an asset Thermal analysis Differential scanning calorimetry DSC, temperaturemodulated DSC, dynamic mechanical thermal testing DMTA, thermo gravimetric analysis TGA, TMA, DEA, coupled thermal analysis, LFA, DDS, Hot Disk, etc. Materials characterisation techniques Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy SEM, atomic force microscopy AFM, IR UV spectroscopy, thermooptical characterisations, NDI NonDestructive Investigations like CT scans as well as surface sensitive techniques like XPS.
