Job Description For our client, the European Space Agency ESA, we are looking for an EndtoEnd Mission Performance Engineer S4 for their location in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, to join their Ground System Deinition Verification Office. You will work within the Project team and will report to the System and Instrument manager. You will support him with reference to The verification of the L1B algorithms integrity and performances The design, development, and procurement of the Level 2 ground processor prototype, its algorithms, and the associated Level 2 simulator The demonstration achievement of the required performance of the Level 2 Products. Tasks and Responsibilities The assessment of the delivered scientific processing algorithm in Python The assessment of the delivered Instrument Quality Tool IQT v2alpha and its ability to process real instrument data PFM Focal Plane SubSystem data , S4 enhanced EM data, The assessment of the delivered Level1 Reference Processor and perform a comparison of the results with the IQT The development, implementation and validation of complex key data generation tools for the instrument calibration and performance verification tasks, as defined in the S4 onground calibration plan and in the L1b processing specification The support to the closedloop testing between the S4UVN measurement data, the IQT v2 and the calibration keydata to demonstrate adequacy, completeness and accuracy of the level0 to level1b data processing algorithms and the calibration keydata The contribution to meetings within ESA, industry and EUMETSAT In addition, the following tasks are to be performed Monitoring the development of the Level 2 Software developed through a contract Ensuring the integrity of the Level 1B and 2 ground prototype processors and its algorithms to meet the necessary functionality and performances, taking into account system, instrument, geophysical model and calibrationvalidation facility aspects and the Ground segment PDS interfaces constraints Ensuring the integrity of the L1B and L2 performance simulators developed through a contract, and maintaining an up to date operating copy at ESTEC Preparing and maintaining performance budgets and analysing impacts on the Swarm mission performances resulting from deviations during the development programme Ensuring the proper verification and validation methods are proposed and implemented Support the preparation of agreements with potential calibration facilities Support campaign and the analysis of the data collected Identifying and resolving problem areas Providing necessary inputs for the scientific meetings In performing the above duties you will closely work with the other staff of the Swarm programme. Requirements The Candidate shall have a university degree or equivalent qualification in Physics or Engineering with demonstrated background and experience in data processing Candidates shall demonstrate good familiarity with computer programslanguages such as CC, Python and MATLAB and with Unix operating system Good communication skills Candidate shall demonstrate familiarity with L0 to L1b data processing of optical instrument using CCD technology A solid background knowledge of the problematics involved in the Earth magnetic modelling and in complex numerical methods and numerical simulation A firsthand experience in the development of numerical modelling software is expected Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team within the boundaries of assigned tasks and a stringent schedule Previous experience in similar working conditions is preferable. The System Performance Engineer will contribute to all aspects relevant to the system performance of the Biomass mission up to Level 1 tbc products in the context of the design and implementation activities undertaken in the frame of the Biomass Project. This includes project internal activities and monitoringreview of the relevant industrial activities. SPECIFIC TASKS Engineering Support the maintenance and coherence of systemlevel requirements including Mission observation, Biomass EndtoEnd simulator BEEPS and Ground Processor Prototype GPP, external and internal calibration, ITU and RFI protection requirements. Monitor and critically analyse the systemlevel performance requirements allocation, their flow down to the relevant contributors, the associated margins and their evolution Support the payload team for aspects relevant to instrument performance requirements flowdown and instrument performance verification, including relevant models and tools Performance Budgets and Performance Modelling Maintain systemlevel performance budgets in coordination with the Biomass Payload and EngineeringAIV sections. Critically monitor and analyse the compliance of the system performance budgets with the endtoend system performance requirements and propose corrective actions in case of deviation Develop and maintain system performance mathematical models and tools to support the performance assessment Acquire knowledge of the BEEPSGPP and conduct performance simulations and sensitivity analyses. Support the BEEPS GPP verification and acceptance activities EndToEnd E2E calibration and Calibration Transponder Monitor and critically analyse the calibration transponder performance budget, its coherence with the system performance budgets and the compliance with the endtoend system performance requirements Verify and ensure the coherence of the E2E and external calibration approaches and ground processing implementation with the instrument internal calibration and instrumentsystem Monitor and review the Biomass calibration plan and the specification, procurement and verificationvalidation of the relevant external calibration equipment General Support activities Support the definition of calval and inflight commissioning plans and the preparation, execution and analysis of the relevant inflight operations during the commissioning phase Support Payload Data Ground Segment PDGS reviews for what concerns the SAR processor and L1L2 processing interface aspects including crossverification activities of the PDGS operational SAR processor Support the interactions with the Biomass Mission Advisory Group MAG for what concerns system performance aspects Support Agency Project reviews Support the System and Mission Performance Manager and the Biomass project team members in all aspects related to system performance, as necessary for the effective execution of the Biomass project. The System Performance Engineer will cooperate closely with the Biomass payload team in the execution of the relevant tasks. Furthermore, shehe will be supported by and is expected to closely cooperate with specialist engineers from the Biomass team, from the Earth Observation System Support Division and from the Directorate of Technical and Quality Management DTEC as appropriate. The incumbent will provide regular reporting to the Biomass System and Mission Performance Manager. REQUIREMENTS Applicants for this post should have a university degree Masters or higher or equivalent qualification in a relevant physical science or engineering subject, together with a demonstrated background and experience in SAR systems, SAR performancecalibration and SAR processing, preferably acquired in a space project environment. Background and experience on the specific issues relevant to low frequency, fullpol SAR systems is an asset. The candidate must possess solid analytical skills and the command of the physics and techniques of SAR systems, together with the capability to critically analyse the work performed by industry in the relevant areas, identify problems and proposeinstigate corrective actions. The candidate shall demonstrate to be proficient with programming tools and languages relevant to the implementation and maintenance of the system performance models e.g. MATLAB, Python.
