Vodafone Italia launches 'Ho' discount brand with 30GB for EUR 7/mth

(Telecompaper) Vodafone Italia has finally launched a low-cost service, called Ho, to compete with the aggressive pricing model of newcomer Iliad and Telecom Italia's Kena Mobile brand. The company is offering 30GB of 4G data plus unlimited calls and texts for EUR 6.99 a month by way of a launch offer initially available until 31 July, compared to Iliad's identical offer for EUR 5.99 a month. An additional EUR 9.99 is payable for the SIM card and activation fee, with SIMs available online or via 3,000 PrimaEdicola newspaper stands and 2,400 points of sale starting from 25 June and customers able to top up via the dedicated Ho app.

Altice to sell stakes in French and Portuguese tower businesses for EUR 2.5 bln

(Telecompaper) Altice Europe has agreed to sell a 49.99 percent stake in its French tower business and a 75 percent stake in its Portuguese tower assets for a total cash consideration of EUR 2.5 billion. The deals, which have been in the making since the beginning of the year, deliver on the group's objective to reduce debt with the disposal of non-core operations.

EU countries agree to cap price of intra-EU calls at EUR 0.19/min

(Telecompaper) European Union governments and MEPs have agreed to cap the price of calling from one EU country to another as part of the proposed European Electronic Communications Code, reports Reuters. Under the terms of the provisional deal, calls from one EU state to another will be capped at 19 eurocents per minute while text messages will cost no more than 6 eurocents each. "No more overly expensive calls and SMS!! Today we decided to put a cap on prices if you call or text another EU-country from your home. Good step forward," said Finnish MEP Miapetra Kumpula-Natri in a tweet.

Canal Plus loses Ligue 1 TV rights to Mediapro as auction raises EUR 1.15 bln

(Telecompaper) The French football league LFP said it has awarded five of the seven packages of Ligue 1 broadcast rights for the 2020-2024 period, for a record EUR 1.15 billion per season. Spanish broadcasting group Mediapro, majority-owned by Chinese private equity fund Orient Hontai, won three of the seven lots on offer, including the one featuring the championship's top ten matches. Current rights owner beIN Sports secured one smaller lot, while Iliad entered the football broadcasting stage for the first time buying the rights to near-live highlights. Canal Plus, which splits Ligue 1 rights with beIN Sports for the 2016-2020 seasons, bid for each of the seven lots but failed to secure any of the packages.

Iliad Italia launches with 30GB plan for EUR 6 a month

(Telecompaper) French operator Iliad has launched its Italian mobile operation under the Iliad brand, promising to revolutionise the market with a launch offer of 30GB of 4G+ data, plus unlimited calls and SMS for EUR 5.99 a month. The company's CEO Benedetto Levi announced the offer at a press conference in Milan, claiming that it's five times cheaper than rival offers and adding that it will be limited to the first 1 million customers who sign up to Iliad. The plan also includes unlimited calls to over 60 international destinations plus 2GB of EU data roaming. SIM cards cost EUR 9.99 and can be acquired at the 100-plus Iliad Stores and Corners distributed throughout the country. The operator is also introducing automatic SIM card distribution machines called 'Simbox' at its shops.
