NTSB issues investigation update on Delta accident at LaGuardia

Delta Flight 1086 was coming in from Atlanta when it skidded off a runway at LaGuardia Airport around 11 a.m. on March 5. As part of its ongoing investigation into the March 5 accident at LaGuardia Airport where Delta Air Lines flight 1086 veered off the runway shortly after touching down, the National Transportation Safety Board has released a third investigative update. At about 11:02 a.m., the Boeing MD-88, flying from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to New York exited the left side of runway 13, struck a perimeter fence with its left wing, and came to rest with its nose on an embankment.

Christopher Hart takes the helm of the NTSB.

Christopher A. Hart was sworn as the 13th chairman of the NTSB during ceremony presided over by Chief Administrative Law Judge Alfonso Montano. Chairman Hart is an aerospace engineer, attorney, and licensed pilot with commercial, multi-engine, and instrument ratings. Prior to stepping into role of acting chairman, Hart had served as vice chairman and a member of the Board since 2009. He also served as a member of the Board from 1990 to 1993.

NTSB to hold forum on dangers of railroad trespassing.

Scheduled for March 24–25, Trains and Trespassing: Ending Tragic Encounters forum will be chaired by NTSB Board Member Robert L. Sumwalt. Event will feature speakers who have been seriously injured by trains; those whose communities have been affected; and railroad employee assistance program employees whose train crews have struck people on railroad property. Forum will review diversity of trespassing accidents and incidents and look at current and future prevention strategies.

NTSB issues recommendations to address smoke in tunnels.

NTSB issued urgent recommendations to the Federal Transit Administration, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, and American Public Transportation Association calling for improved ventilation procedures during smoke and fire events in tunnels. NTSB is recommending nationwide audit of transit agencies by FTA to assess state of tunnel ventilation systems, written emergency procedures for fire and smoke events, and training to ensure compliance with these procedures.
