NTSB to offer training on emergency communications.

NTSB is devoting 2 days at its Training Center to offer guidance to aviation public affairs professionals on how to most effectively manage emergency communications following major aircraft accident or incident. NTSB specialists will explain process by which investigation-related information is verified and released to news media and family members of those affected by accident. In addition, members of the national news media will discuss how they cover aviation accidents.

NTSB: Rail Track Was to Be Replaced Day After Virginia Crash

A piece of railroad track owned by CSX Corp. in Lynchburg, Va., was scheduled for replacement the day after a crude-oil train derailed and erupted in flames along the same stretch, according to federal investigators. The National Transportation Safety Board released this week documents detailing its investigation into the April 30, 2014, derailment, which caused the evacuation of hundreds of downtown residents.

NTSB Study shows ECP brakes out-perform other systems.

Study shows Electronically Controlled Pneumatic (ECP) brake systems out-performed distributed power configurations, which out-performed conventional brake systems. Detailed description and analysis of each rail braking system, along with stopping distances they achieved under various circumstances, are included.

NTSB determines cause of hard landing at LaGuardia.

NTSB determined that the captain's failed attempt to recover from an unstabilized approach by transferring airplane control at low altitude instead of performing a go-around, caused a hard landing at LaGuardia International Airport in Queens, NY. On July 22, 2013, a Boeing 737, operated as Southwest Airlines flight 345, landed hard, nose-first, on runway 4 at LGA. Of the 144 passengers and 5 crewmembers on board, 8 sustained minor injuries and airplane was substantially damaged.

NTSB investigates 2014 truck-motorcoach collision.

After investigating a truck-motorcoach collision that resulted in 10 fatalities in Orland, CA, NTSB recommended that motorcoach interiors be designed with improved flammability requirements as well as improved emergency exits, and that event data recorders be installed on commercial trucks and motorcoaches. In the crash, a 2007 Volvo truck-tractor operated by FedEx Freight, Inc. crossed a 58 ft wide median, struck a 2013 Nissan Altima, and then collided head-on with a 2014 Setra motorcoach.
