Qualcomm pays EUR 1.3 bln bond to enforce Apple sales ban in Germany

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm announced that it has posted EUR 1.34 billion in bonds in Germany in order to enforce a court order against sales of Apple devices in the country. The court ordered Apple in December to cease the sale and import of certain iPhones found to be infringing Qualcomm's patents for power-saving technology. The court also ordered Apple to recall infringing iPhones from third-party resellers in Germany.

(Telecompaper) The German regional court in Munich ruled on 20 December against Apple in the patent dispute with Qualcomm. As a result of the patent infringement, the court granted Qualcomm's request for an injunction banning the sale of certain iPhone models in Germany.

Why would Apple want to put Qualcomm out of business? It'is because Apple uses a lock-in strategy, where once on an Apple platform it is painful to get off. Most of the smart Apple iPhone users I know actually use Google apps and Google's infrastructure and other third-party tools on their iPhones, so if they want to move to an Android phone they can move almost seamlessly.

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm Technologies has unveiled its new Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem, purpose-built for IoT applications such as asset trackers, health monitors, security systems, smart city sensors and smart meters, as well as a range of wearable trackers. Quectel is the first global provider scheduled to provide mobile modules based on the new modem. Gemalto and Telit will also launch products based on the new modem in 2019.
