Data Processing Support Engineer

Position Reference 060 You will have the opportunity to provide engineering support to design and system engineeringreengineering activities, fully system lifecycle, in the area of the Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Multi Mission Element framework, which consists in a system of offline Ground Segment elements, specifically for the Long Trend Analysis, Quality Monitoring and Reporting aimed to support the operational activities of existing and future programmes. Tasks and Activities The scope of work will include Contribute to the definition, design, implementation and maintenance of architectures for data processing ground segments and their components with special emphasis on product quality control, calibration and validation, production monitoring and reporting. Maintenance and evolutions of applications system in the area of the Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Multi Mission Element framework and in all its components Configuration Management, building and distribution of applications software releases and patches Contribution to applications software system design and reengineering in the area of the Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Multi Mission Element framework Support the operations of existing data processing ground segments and their maintenance and evolution. This will also include upgrade software, including implementing and maintaining new algorithms for product quality control and calibrationvalidation activities. Perform routine tasks in operational systems under configuration control such as Contribute to the Configuration Management process and the building anddistribution of software releases and patches Contribute to the development, integration and configuration management of software developed by third parties, its installation, and configuration and testing Anomaly investigations, documentation and classification. Follow up of the delivery of SW resolutions for these anomalies Perform standard SW engineering activities such as SW testing in a structured approach to verify that delivered SW is fulfilling therequirements or to demonstrate that problems have been corrected SW integration and verification in the EUMETSAT ground segments Settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures, Contribute to the procurement and installation of software, and the coordination with external providers of support services Participation in meetings and formal reviews. Skills and Experience The following skills and experience are mandatory You have a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline You have relevant experience in preparation of requirements, design, interfaces and testing documentation for data processing systems considering the systems engineering aspects of data processing management and data provision experience of data processing for high data rate missions andor Earth Observation missions is an asset but is not mandatory You have experience in SW design, SW development, Web applications programming, operation, maintenance and trouble shooting of large complex realtime data processing systems for Earth Observation missions. You have a competence in objectoriented software design and implementation possibly in the context of satellite instrument data processing systems. You are able to write accurate and consistent technical documentation. You have very good communication and presentation skills and be able to cope with very high workloads. You are able to learn and develop the needed skills and knowledge to contribute to the development of Data Processing applications within the Supporting Application Engineering Team. This includes the ability to rapidly absorb, and make use of, information presented in written and oral communications in a dynamic context You are able to maintain a system overview is essential. You will have a systematic approach to work, be able to plan their work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks. You have demonstrated knowledge and experience in CC programming language experience in a UNIXLINUX based environment You have demonstrated experience in the use of application programming of database systems e.g. ORACLE, INFORMIX, PostgreSQL and MySQL You have competence in the use of scripting languages e.g. shell scripting, highlevel languages e.g. Python, Java and correspondent using of their libraries You have knowledge of web technologies, programming and markup languages e.g. Apache, CGI, JavaScript, UML You have knowledge of XML and related technologies XPATH, SVG, etc. You have competence in the exploitation of modern hardware and operating systems at the application level e.g. parallel programming pthreads, MPI, OpenMP You are familiarity with data formats used for meteorological satellite products You have experience in design and implementation of MMI using different toolkits and languages The following skills would be highly desirable You have experience with the programming and usage of IDL and Fortran You have experience in Web Programming You have competence in SW testing, unit test suite maintenance, automated testing, verification and validation You have experience in system design for quality control and calval systems You have knowledge of relevant Standards, Quality Assurance and Configuration Management principles and applications. Main responsibilities The OM Instrument Operations and Calibration Scientist works within the Science Operations Centre SOC with responsibilities that may include Acting as interface between the SGS and a certain number of PI Teams, in particular the Optical Monitor OM Team which may require deep knowledge about specific instrument functionality, performance and operations Coordinating of the calibration efforts by the OM ESA IDT and the instrument principal investigator team, the latter being spread across different institutes and universities across Europe Understand the functionality of the OM instrument data to be archived and support the definition of the instruments Archive data products in coordination with the Archive Scientist and in the data pipeline development Organise and maintain uptodate all information concerning the instrument which is deemed necessary for future knowledge preservation Contribute to the SGS preparation activities including definition of operations plans procedures and preparation of training activities Contribute to the maintenance of the overall system, including configuration control and versioning Additionally, the Key Person will be in charge of the following Cooperate with other projects on operational matters e.g. promote the exchange of information with missions where appropriate Calibration of the scientific instruments onboard XMMNewton EPIC, RGS and in particular OM Preparation of instrument calibration activities and analysis of calibration data Preparation and maintenance of Routine Calibration Plan Absolute calibration of the OM instrument Implementation of calibration results into the XMMNewton Current Calibration Files, following the verification of the calibration scientific quality, as well as of standard canned redistribution matrix files for XMMNewton users Contribution to archive release testing or related activities. Ideal candidate The candidate should have a Science PhD or Masters Degree from a recognised Institution of secondary studies and at least 4 years of experience with tasks similar to the ones described above. Additionally, the Key Person should have proved experience in large collaborative projects in an international environment. The candidate must have deep knowledge of astronomical tools and data analysis software. Knowledge of the XMMNewton project and experience in SAS are an important asset. Purpose Support for EEE Parts Selection, associated PA and related activities. Key Tasks Maintain a coherent approach to EEE parts selection in line with company guidelines and project requirements. Liaise with product design engineers, production procurement entities on parts selection and part related issues such as derating, radiation tolerance and reliability and assembly. Collation of informationdata and maintenance of the EEE parts database in cooperation with ECAD and other teams Provide technical support to Peer Reviews and MRBs as required. Help develop and maintain internal information sharing on EEE parts including EEE parts alerts Coordinate EEE activities between equipment suppliers, prime contractor external, review authorities and procurement agents. For projects working i.a.w. ESCC requirements review internal subcontractor DCLs and PADs for compliance to project technical and PA requirements. Participate in Parts Control Boards as required Support project teams in EEE related activities including review and generation of project related documents such as procurement, BoM, specifications, DPAs, Reports or Goodsin data review Knowledge, Skills and Experience Strong background in Electronic Engineering, including knowledge of EEE parts, part classes, technologies and design application. Previous experience in parts engineering in Space andor HiReliability domain using qualified parts. Working knowledge of ESA MIL systems Knowledge of commercial EEE parts and qualities Good appreciation or experience of circuit design, part application and product assembly would be beneficial Appreciation of the effects of ionising radiation on parts.
