We are currently looking for a Earth Observation Applications Support Engineer to support our customer in the United Kingdom. Earth Observation Applications Support Engineer Responsibilities As part of the ESA climate office, your responsibilities are to expand the awareness, utilisation and scientific impact of EO data for climate research and applications, in particular for the ocean but also for other domains of the earth system. The tasks include conducting scientific data exploitation activities and research studies to address gaps in knowledge as part of the contribution of European Earth Observation science to future IPCC assessments and reports, supporting and informing the implementation of global policy decisions taken at COP21 in Paris, December 2015. Key Tasks Establishing a dialogue with specialised user communities, analysing their needs for satellitebased observations of the climate system, and assessing their feedback on available EObased information Deriving technical specifications for Fundamental Climate Data Records and Essential Climate Variables, chiefly from ESA EO Missions, with specific regard to longterm stability, consistency, completeness, availability, errorcharacterisation, reducing uncertainties, and compatibility with climate observations from other Space and non space sources Setting up and managing industrial contracts RD projects and other EO exploitation activities to respond to the needs for EObased information of climate research and climate services, including for reanalysis, modelling, attribution, projection, prediction, trends assessment, and data assimilation Ensuring the results of such developments are tested and verified with the corresponding climate user communities Cooperating with internal and external partner organisations to transfer capabilities developed under a research and demonstration context into an operational framework Maintaining links and ensuring coherence with relevant activities of Member States and international partner organisations Contributing to the Agencys public communications on EO. Skills Experience You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience PhD preferably in oceanography, physics or geophysics, or other appropriate scientific fields, and have at least two years of experience in related remote sensing applications development andor research Extensive professional experience on product definition, calibration, validation, algorithm development, quality assessment and exploitation of Earth Observation data, particularly ESA missions, a demonstrable experience from relevant scientific exploitation activities either internationally or in ESA member states and an established profile with research communities working on the ocean and its relation to climate Fluency in English is mandatory knowledge of another European language is an advantage. Summary An opportunity for an experienced EO professional to work for Telespazio VEGA onsite at ECSAT. Objective To give expert support expanding the awareness, utilisation and scientific impact of EO data for climate research and applications. Responsibilities Duties The incumbent shall maximise the contribution of European Earth Observation science including ESAs flagship programme on climate science, the Climate Change Initiative to future IPCC assessments and reports, and support and inform the implementation of global policy decisions taken at COP21 in Paris, December 2015. In their capacity, the incumbent shall be responsible for ensuring effectively delivery of the Climate Change Initiatives knowledge exchange strategy as well as providing support and advice on knowledge exchange in order to encourage the use of Climate Office knowledge and results by business, public and civil society, with the final objective to influence policy and practices. Duties will include but will not be limited to Establishing a dialogue with specialised user communities from the scientific, public, policy and educational sectors, analysing their needs for satellitebased observations of the climate system, and assessing their feedback Communicating the work of ESA that is relevant for climate user communities, including but not limited to research and write online articles, create and plan content for social media, and analyse web and social media statistics Exploring and developing innovative ways of communicating and delivering learning on EO climate topics. This includes using data visualisation, investigating classrooms and workshops to distance and online education. Organising events, workshops, conferences, in line with the goal of expanding awareness, utilisation and scientific impact of EO data for climate research and applications Maintaining links and ensuring coherence with relevant activities of Member States and international partner organisations Contributing to the Agencys public communications on EO. Qualifications Experience A PhD preferably in Earth Science, or other appropriate scientific fields, and have a deep understanding of climate change science. Good knowledge of the international climate community and policy decisions. A track record of communication of scientific concepts with diverse audiences. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and within a team. Website content management experience and website analysis skills. Excellent organisational and planning skills. Experience with basic computer software such as WordExcelPowerPoint. Ability to multitask and prioritise workloads. Particular importance will be attached to a candidates personal scientific ability and credibility amongst their peers, as well as flexibility and adaptability. The candidate should be capable of working effectively in a team with minimum supervision and have excellent communication and presentation skills. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these two languages is required. The knowledge of another memberstate language is an asset. Experience with design software such as Adobe IllustratorPhotoshop. Familiarity with integrating outreach activity within an ESA member state National Curriculum in schools. An interest in data visualisation.
