Description The SREO Computer Support Group CSG is providing computer support to all science operations centres and science ground segments located at ESAC, either in development or in operational phase. Under this work package service shall be provided to support ESA in system administration activities for those computer systems used for science operations and research activities. These computers are general servers or workstations mainly based on Linux and Sun Solaris, Macintoshes, PC for Office Automation activities. The environment also includes Disk Storage infrastructure, Virtual infrastructure as well as GRID and Cloud computing infrastructures. Systems can be physical machines or provided through virtual infrastructure. These systems are connected to networks organized by functions operational, office and development, external services, GRID, Cloud and administration networks. Specific service tasks would include installation, configuration, deployment, integration, monitoring, administration and maintenance of these computer systems, scientific and commercial software installation and administration, data backup and retrieval, interface with IT vendors for quotation, installation and maintenance agreements, users IT support, defining and operating computers operational procedures, hardware inventory tracking. It specifically excludes ESA corporate informatics infrastructure services office automation, network, terminal servers, Lotus Notes, LAN and communications, which are provided and subject to separate Service Level Agreements SLA. The SREO computer environment at ESAC contains a number of computers dedicated to science operations and archive activities. These are general servers or workstations mainly based on Linux and Sun Solaris, Macintoshes, PC for Office Automation activities and some OpenVMS machines. Systems can be physical machines or provided through the department virtual infrastructure. These systems are connected to networks organized by functions operational, office and development, external services, GRID, Cloud and administration networks. The Computer Support Group is also maintaining the ESAC GRID and Cloud computing environments, used for project data processing, daily science analysis tasks by user. The external GRID computing environment is also connected to the European EGI infrastructure. Specific service tasks include UNIX LINUX and SOLARIS, Macintosh and PC System management Installation, configuration, integration and setting up of new machines with appropriate operating systems and layered software Administration and operation management of computer systems Installation and configuration of new disks and other devices and new users accounts. User support mainly scientists and engineers Handle the mail aliases and mail distribution list. Handlingcheckingmodifying all backups. Definition, implementation and maintenance of computer operators procedures Issues of documentation and technical reports GRID related activities Installation, configuration, integration, operations, maintenance and upgrade of Grid Engine and EGI UMD GRID middleware infrastructure Support users to adapt their computing tasks to the GRID infrastructure Cloud related activities Installation, configuration, integration, operations, maintenance and upgrade of Eucalyptus Cloud middleware Knowledge of other Cloud middleware is an asset Contact with hardware and software suppliers Definition of hardwaresoftware needs and quotation requests for new purchases and maintenance contracts Locking hardware incidents calls and following the call history. Description The work covers a broad range of secretarial and administrative services and support to all organisational aspects to be provided to the secretariat of the Senior Scientific Advisor SREA. Standard tasks like meeting and travel organisation are complemented by specific tasks to cope with the broad range of responsibilities delegated to the Senior Science Advisor. The scope of work and tasks to be performed are Daytoday support to Unit personnel regarding business travel arrangements, leave management, coordination of training. Dealing with incoming telephone calls and information requests. Analysing incoming correspondence and documentation and managing distribution of outgoing correspondence and documentation. Provision of various logistic support to the Unit. Arrivals office, phone, computer, security, access to databases, information systems and departures deregistration, etc. of Unit personnel. Profile Specific knowledge is required in the following areas Familiarity with modern electronic office automation tools e.g. Microsoft Office suite and techniques, electronic mailing, customised database, and internet software applications. Capacity to identify priority actions requiring the attention of the Senior Scientific Advisor, to maintain an uptodate action list, and to supply or source background material as necessary. Capacity to identify priority actions for the contractors own work and to handle high workload. Wellbalanced autonomy in executing the required tasks. Documentation management and use of related tools and techniques in relation to the concerned activities. The Senior Scientific Advisor has a number of specific duties and responsibilities within the Directorate. These include a significant outfacing component, liaising with the external scientific community and with various scientific bodies, organisations, and institutions. Thus, the contractor must be able to deal in a flexible, responsive manner with a variety of interfaces external to ESA, and be able to prioritise between them effectively when the needs arises. Similarly, the contractor must maintain an uptodate agenda for the Senior Scientific Advisor. In addition, the contractor will also need to support the activities of the Communications, Outreach, and Education Group COEG of the Directorate, which falls under the responsibility of the Senior Scientific Adviser. The COEG is charged with communicating the progress on the implementation of missions and their scientific results once in operation, via written and visual material published on the web, in brochures, and other materials. Audiences include the general public, the external scientific community, ESA internally, and schools. Any specific experience in working in the domain of communications would therefore be an asset. For the execution of the above tasks, the contractor will be required to use ESA corporate and DSRE specific IT systems and databases. Experience using Apple Macintosh systems and the OS X operating system would be an asset. Good interpersonal and communication skills are indispensable. A good team spirit is also essential.
