System Performance Engineer Biomass Project

Currently, we are looking for a highly skilled System Performance Engineer for Biomass Project who will work for ESTEC, in the Netherlands. The System Performance Engineer will contribute to all aspects relevant to the system performance of the Biomass mission up to Level 1 tbc products in the context of the design and implementation activities undertaken in the frame of the Biomass Project. This includes project internal activities and monitoringreview of the relevant industrial activities. SPECIFIC TASKS Engineering Support the maintenance and coherence of systemlevel requirements including Mission observation, Biomass EndtoEnd simulator BEEPS and Ground Processor Prototype GPP, external and internal calibration, ITU and RFI protection requirements. Monitor and critically analyse the systemlevel performance requirements allocation, their flow down to the relevant contributors, the associated margins and their evolution Support the payload team for aspects relevant to instrument performance requirements flowdown and instrument performance verification, including relevant models and tools Performance Budgets and Performance Modelling Maintain systemlevel performance budgets in coordination with the Biomass Payload and EngineeringAIV sections. Critically monitor and analyse the compliance of the system performance budgets with the endtoend system performance requirements and propose corrective actions in case of deviation Develop and maintain system performance mathematical models and tools to support the performance assessment Acquire knowledge of the BEEPSGPP and conduct performance simulations and sensitivity analyses. Support the BEEPS GPP verification and acceptance activities EndToEnd E2E calibration and Calibration Transponder Monitor and critically analyse the calibration transponder performance budget, its coherence with the system performance budgets and the compliance with the endtoend system performance requirements Verify and ensure the coherence of the E2E and external calibration approaches and ground processing implementation with the instrument internal calibration and instrumentsystem Monitor and review the Biomass calibration plan and the specification, procurement and verificationvalidation of the relevant external calibration equipment General Support activities Support the definition of calval and inflight commissioning plans and the preparation, execution and analysis of the relevant inflight operations during the commissioning phase Support Payload Data Ground Segment PDGS reviews for what concerns the SAR processor and L1L2 processing interface aspects including crossverification activities of the PDGS operational SAR processor Support the interactions with the Biomass Mission Advisory Group MAG for what concerns system performance aspects Support Agency Project reviews Support the System and Mission Performance Manager and the Biomass project team members in all aspects related to system performance, as necessary for the effective execution of the Biomass project. The System Performance Engineer will cooperate closely with the Biomass payload team in the execution of the relevant tasks. Furthermore, shehe will be supported by and is expected to closely cooperate with specialist engineers from the Biomass team, from the Earth Observation System Support Division and from the Directorate of Technical and Quality Management DTEC as appropriate. The incumbent will provide regular reporting to the Biomass System and Mission Performance Manager. REQUIREMENTS Applicants for this post should have a university degree Masters or higher or equivalent qualification in a relevant physical science or engineering subject, together with a demonstrated background and experience in SAR systems, SAR performancecalibration and SAR processing, preferably acquired in a space project environment. Background and experience on the specific issues relevant to low frequency, fullpol SAR systems is an asset. The candidate must possess solid analytical skills and the command of the physics and techniques of SAR systems, together with the capability to critically analyse the work performed by industry in the relevant areas, identify problems and proposeinstigate corrective actions. The candidate shall demonstrate to be proficient with programming tools and languages relevant to the implementation and maintenance of the system performance models e.g. MATLAB, Python. Radio Navigation terrestrial applications performed at ESA are those related with high performance based on high accuracy e.g. geodesy andor high integrity e.g. civil aviation, maritime Radio Navigation signals and signal processing. The work includes study, design, analysis and testing of signal and signal processing techniques including toolsequipment development and procurement. It encompasses signal structure, modulations, data dissemination, techniques for error correction, synchronisation, multipath mitigation and estimation, interference mitigation, cancellation, encryption, authentication, etc Radio Navigation Laboratory equipment. The work includes definition procurement design, testing, usage of Radio Navigation equipment in support to Radio Navigation experiments and test campaigns Assistance in preparation of invitation to tenders related to ESA Projects and RD activities and contracts technical followup Specific engineering support to space projects developed by ESA andor by major European industriesoperators Validation of designs by means of analyses, simulations, laboratory testing and field trials possibly in cooperation with third parties Design, implementation and testing tasks for technological projects Execution of internal RD activities through design, prototyping, analysis and simulations Simulation and testing in laboratory of Navigation systems and equipment Preparation of technical documents on above subjects Support to related demonstrations inside and outside ESTEC The work concerning laboratory activities will be performed based on the existing Radio Navigation facilities available at ESTEC. Participation in studies supporting current and future PNT systems definition andor analysis, in particular for what concerns system performances and receiver algorithms signal processing, advanced hybrid PNT algorithms, situational awareness and mitigation of local impairments for improved availability, reliability and resilience. Participation to the activities supporting standardisation and technical working groups addressing the aforementioned topics Design, definition and follow up of industrial contracts related to the aforementioned topics, including RD activities and.or procurement of GNSS testbeds and receivers for infrastructure or user technologies user segments. Support design, implementation, maintenance and operation of Radio Navigation equipment, complex Radio Navigation simulation tools and test facilities for testing features endtoend performances, receivers, etc. in the aforementioned activities. REQUIREMENTS Masters Degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Physics or Aerospace Engineering Specific knowledge in the design and testing of Radio Navigation systems and equipment Strong knowledge on the design of satellite navigation systems, ranging and positioning techniques, RF, signal processing techniques, and digital navigation receivers Relevant experience with the GNSS1, EGNOS andor GALILEO systems and equipment and have and good knowledge of Radio Navigation simulation and testing systems Proven experience in the implementation, maintenance and operation of complex Radio Navigation simulation and test facilities for spacecraft, aircraft, maritime and land mobile applications Strong experience at user level with satellite navigation receivers and satellite navigation positioning and integrity algorithms Some experience of commercial simulation software is desirable Candidates must be eligible to apply for a Personal Security Clearance. SPECIFIC TASKS The Galileo Project System Engineer will report to the Head of the Galileo Project Management Support Office. Tasks and activities include System Engineering in all phases of spacecraft projects. A range of support tasks is required to be carried out in system engineering and subsystem domains, including early throughout implementation phases of space projects, in particular for small demonstration missions and education projects.
