Job description For our customer, the European Space Agency ESA, we are seeking an experienced Physicist Electrical Engineer specializing in electromagnetic wave interaction and propagation to work at ESAs ESTEC site in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. Responsibilities You will be assigned to ESAESTECs Wave Interaction Propagation Section within the Directorate of Technical and Quality Management. The sections activities cover electromagnetic wave propagation and interaction engineering in support to ESA Projects in Telecoms, Navigation, Earth Observation and Science and Exploration. It leads the Agencys RD programme in this domain identifies, implements and validates inhouse software analysis tools and contributes to the design and execution of propagation or interaction measurement campaigns. The specific tasks to be performed are Support to the Agencys Earth Observation projects in the field of microwave active and passive remote sensing of natural surfaces land and sea and of atmosphere wave interaction, data processing, retrieval algorithms and performance assessment. Support to internal activities and projects in the field of microwave propagation in the atmosphere theoretical and empirical modelling, and related analysis of impact on telecom, navigation or data downlink for Earth Observation and Space Exploration missions RD in related fields. Support to the experimental facility. This is a fulltime position located at ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands. The requested start of work is midApril 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. Qualifications Competencies The successful candidate shall have A PhD or Masters Degree in Physics or Electrical Engineering with a background in the physics andor engineering of microwave interaction with the natural environment. At least 4 years relevant postgraduate working experience. Broad experience in the physics of electromagnetic interaction as well as in the development and validation of retrieval algorithms for atmospheric remote sensing. Understanding of the scientific background and experience with the performance assessment and the endtoend simulation of atmospheric remote sensing instruments. Experience with microwave remote sensing observation concepts. Experience with microwave atmosphere propagation models. Good programming skills. Within the Wide Area Network WAN Services Network Architecture Competence Area CA of the Generic Systems and Infrastructure GSI Division, the Wide Area Network Engineer supports the design, procurement and deployment of WAN infrastructure and services for current and emerging communication networks. DUTIES Support the definition of requirements for WAN services, and for maintenance, enhancement and major evolutions of the consolidated EUMETSAT communication network architecture Specify WAN communication systems requirements for the development of ground segments for future satellite systems including, if required, interagency data exchange Contribute to the design and development of scalable and sustainable mid and longterm WAN solutions, including in some cases the deployment and testing of proof of concept solutions Manage the procurement of WAN engineering support services andor WAN services, participate on tender evaluation boards and oversee the selected service providers during the execution of these contracts Maintain the schedule of existing contracts held within the competence area, including financial data and the planning for renewals, extensions Produce and maintain technical designs and detailed engineering specification documentation in support of internal processes Maintain and develop contacts with WAN suppliers while ensuring uptodate knowledge is maintained on WAN products and solutions that reflect industry trends and bestpractices. EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS The initial contract will be of 4 years duration, with subsequent 5year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of followup contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT. This post is graded A2A4 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 5,612 per month net of internal tax which may be negotiable based on skills and experience.
