Mechanisms Engineer

We are looking for a Mechanisms Engineer to be based at Airbus Defence Space Limited in Stevenage. As a Mechanisms Engineer your role will involve the detailed design, development and verification of high reliability, complex space mechanisms with a focus on motor development for both telecoms spacecraft and science missions. You will join a team of 12 highly experienced engineers who are all knowledgeable and passionate about space mechanisms. As a Mechanisms Engineer you will be responsible for the full lifecycle of motor development projects, current and future, working alongside different department experts from whom you will gain engineering knowledge in a diverse technical environment including thermal, stress, materials, environmental testing and quality, while also gaining a comprehensive working knowledge of complex space mechanisms and tribology. The successful candidate will be subject to security clearance in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs. The role will involve some UK and European travel for business and as such you must be willing to travel accordingly. Understanding and working to a detailed technical specification Perform mechanisms and motor related design, analyses and tradeoffs Collaborating with specialist analytical departments and test departments stress, thermal, radiation, electrical, manufacturing, test, etc. to ensure the final analyses and test process satisfies stringent philosophies Preparation of reports for management, project and department Carry out tradeoffs and preliminary concept designs for early phase science studies Develop and maintain excellent customer working relationships including ESA, internal Airbus departments and the end customer Assist in preparation of technical elements for bids and proposals Support other Airbus Defence and Space departments on studies Contribute to work packages to ensure tasksactivities are completed on time, on cost and on quality Support the project responsible engineer during development, qualification and acceptance verification and validation Work closely with the project manager to ensure schedule and budgets are closely adhered to This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Companys success, reputation and sustainable growth. Familiar with the basic motor equations and ohms law and their application to simple motor driven systems Familiar with the specification and operation of stepper motor permanent magnet, hybrid powered and unpowered static torque profiles and their relevance for intermittently powered systems An understanding of the different methods of driving stepper motors Unipolar, Bipolar, ministep, etc. Familiar with the specification, operation and understanding of the speed torque profile of DC brushed motors Familiar with open loop drive methods for DC motors Knowledge of small gearboxes designed to be directly driven by motors such as mentioned above, in particular what elements contribute to efficiency and how to demonstrate margins in a motor gearbox assembly Construction and performance of motors and gearboxes as to be able to influence or make decisions on detail design lements, noting that these items will likely be designed and manufactured by specialist external manufacturers Airbus is committed to achieving workforce diversity and creating an inclusive working environment. PA Safety Engineer

Summary An opportunity for an experienced Product Assurance and Safety Engineer to work onsite at ESTEC for Telespazio VEGA UK. Objective To provide PA Safety support in the DTEC Directorate in the Quality Assurance and Management Section for designated ESA Projects. Responsibilities Duties Duties will include but are not limited to Support ESA Product Assurance Safety PAS Manager in all activities related to the execution of the Product Assurance Programme for the designated project and deputising for the PAS Manager as required Establishing the PAS requirements baseline for all elements of the project, in compliance with the ESA general Product Assurance and Safety policy Produce and implement plans, define inputs, outputs, participants, responsibilities, interfaces, coordinate efforts of participants, and produce resulting consolidated inputs Act as focal point for PA activities, for example involving participation in the manufacturing, integration and test activities, e.g. manufacturing readiness reviews MRR, mandatory inspection points MIPs, test readiness reviews TRRs, test review boards TRBs Support the Risk Management and Configuration Management processes within the ESA Project Team, including the disposition of Request for Deviations and Request for Waivers RFDs RFWs Supporting the PAS Manager to ensure the effective implementation and execution of the nonconformance identification and reporting mechanisms within the contractor supply chain and confirm the correct and formal closure of nonconformances Participating in the Boards established within the project for the disposition of Nonconformances Failure Reviews, Test Reviews, etc. Produce reports of participation to boards, indicating the contribution made to these boards e.g. review of agendas, participants, minutes of meeting, action follow up, closeout Assist the PAS Manager in ensuring that all formally delivered items within the Project supply chain conform with requirements using formal acceptance reviews Delivery Review Boards DRBs Produce reports on project and review activities, including conclusions and recommendations where necessary, participate in progress meetings, when needed and reporting on project PA Monitoring project PA status identify relevant PA issues, including NCR SPR Waivers Problems Critical Items and systematically tracking all items. Produce monthly reports of monitoring activities performed e.g. inspections, checks, visits, reviews, including conclusions and recommendations Guiding and monitoring the application and procurement of EEE parts, materials and processes and controlling implementation of applicable requirements Produce reports on guidance provided, monitoring activities performed and status of compliance to applicable requirements. Monitoring the manufacturing, integration and test activities with quality assurance audits, mandatory and key inspection points, test witnessing and configuration inspections Produce report on activities performed with conclusion and recommendations Defining the formal acceptance requirements and conducting the Acceptance Reviews of all contractual deliverable items Produce and implement plans for the preparation of the formal acceptance requirements, defining steps, inputs, outputs, participants, responsibilities, interfaces, and coordinating efforts of participants to produce resulting consolidated inputs to project documents. Produce also reports on the activities performed for conduction of Acceptance Reviews Supporting the organisation management of the support from all PA disciplines Controlling NCR Waivers Problems Critical Items. Produce meeting agendas, check that all inputs are available for the NRB or CCB, check that all needed participants are involved, produce NRB or CCB minutes of meeting, followup on actions identified, ensure proper nonconformancewavierproblemcritical item closeout. Produce also reports on control activities performed. Participating in progress meetings and CCB meetings. Produce inputs to the meeting and whenever requested, produce meeting agendas, check that all inputs are available, check that all needed participants are involved, produce minutes of meeting, followup on actions identified, ensure proper closeout. Participating in all project reviews, including safety reviews. Produce reports on all review activities performed e.g. documents reviewed, checklists used, spot check performed, conclusions and recommendations. Reporting project PA status deviations from plan schedule of all of above. Qualifications Experience Masters degree or equivalent qualification in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or equivalent. Minimum of 10 years experience in the space sector, including 5 years in Product and Quality Assurance is desired. Knowledge of Configuration Management or the implementation of Product Assurance within a quality system certified to ISO 9001 would be an asset. Essential Skills Good English language skills. Excellent interpersonal skills are needed, together with a high degree of organizational and communication abilities, and the ability to work comfortably in a diverse, multinational team environment.
