Job description Responsibilities For Termas longterm customer, the European Southern Observatory ESO, an international astronomical institute based in Garching close to Munich we are currently looking for an experienced Software Engineer. The ESO Very Large Telescope VLT is a collection of optical and near Infrared telescopes that can operate independently or combined as an interferometer. Automated processing of telescope data is managed by a suite of data pipeline software. The Software Engineer will support activities at the site to work on tasks such as Development and maintenance of software in CC. Experience with implementation of multithreadeddistributed applications. Experience with real time operating systems and embedded systems preferred VxWorks. Candidate selection will be driven by software skills, although domain knowledge and a demonstrated ability to function in a scientific environment is also a consideration. This is a fulltime position at ESO in Garching Munich, Germany with a planned starting date in January 2016. Qualifications Competencies Applicants shall have an university degree, preferably in computer science or other suitable qualification together with some background in data processing. Essential skills are Minimum 5 years of experience working as software engineer Strong skills developing applications in CC programming languages Experience in implementation of high level, object oriented multithreadeddistributed applications Experience in real time operating systems and embedded systems preferred VxWorks Strong background in unit testing Familiarity with Linux Experience in the full lifecycle of software projects Knowledge of version control, including the related tooling Experience in working in software development teams Fluency in English spoken and written, as English is the working language Desirable skills are Implementation of software frameworks and pattern based design Knowledge of control systems theory andor digital signal processing Practical experience in implementation of control andor digital signal processing software Familiarity with CORBA and DDS distributed middleware Good command of C template and generic programming techniques Familiarity with programming of vector arithmetical units in C Basic knowledge of adaptive optics algorithms Good command of MATLAB Previous experience in a similar consultancy role, i.e., as resident consultant operating onsite within a customer organisation Exposure international andor scientific organisation The position requires a great deal of independence and selfmotivation. For one of our main customers, EUMETSAT, we are currently looking for a MultiMission Software Librarian.The Key person shall work in the TSS Technical and Scientific Support Departments GSI Generic Systems and Infrastructure Division, supporting all Ground Segment Commissioning and Routine Operations. These Ground Systems monitor and control EUMETSATs MTP, MSG and METOP satellites and process and distribute all data from their instrument payloads. Tasks and Responsibilities As a member of the CSM Software Librarian team, the consultant shall Provide support to the development and maintenance of all current and future operational ground segments. The main duties are the maintenance and the redesign of the asbuilt software build environments and the building, packaging and distribution of any software that can be built onsite. Furthermore the duties include a range of tasks, from support to the operation of the UNIX and Windowsbased ground segment facilities, to the analysis, design, development, testing,and maintenance of software functions. They also include the settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures as well as the coordination with external providers of maintenance services. In particular the tasks will include Maintenance and development of the asbuilt software build environments Building, packaging and distribution of software releases and patches Support to programmers with respect to software build and development strategies Support the delivery of software externally developed its installation, configuration and testing Investigation into anomalies, their documentation and classification follow up of the delivery of SW corrections Participation in technical meetings and formal reviews Analysis of the maintenance requirements and identification, procurement or implementation of the tools to fulfil them writing of maintenance procedures Interfacing with external contractors who are providing maintenance services for ground segment facilities Experience and education The Key person shall have a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline experience of SW development, configuration controlled software build environments experience in SW packaging, installation and configuration for the operation and maintenance of large, realtime Monitoring Control I Data Processing systems. The Key person shall have significant work experience in Unix and Unixlike Operating System environments and in Windows and Windows Serverbased environments. HeShe should be familiar, to the extent required by the performance of the above tasks, with networking, distributed applications, and TCPIP services. Knowledge and experience of the following programming languages, software tools and processes is mandatory Essential knowledge and experience in using UnixLinux command line tools Software build environments and tools e.g. autoconfautomake, make, ANT, Maven Source Code control systems, preferably Subversion, CVS or ClearCase Experience with various software packaging formats RPM, PKG, LPP ... Experience in unattended, centralized software installation mechanisms PXETFTP, NIM, AutoYast, kickstart etc. Scripting languages e.g. Shell, Perl, TclTk, Python Basic UNIX System Administration CC programming languages Java programming language Change Management Practical knowledge of as many as possible of the following software tools and products will be an advantage Basic Windows System Administration Database programming Sybase andor Oracle ECLIPSE or a similar IDE Formalised Software Testing MSAccess, Visual Basic programming FORTRAN programming Serena Dimensions CM The key person shall display Very good communication, presentation, and team working skills combined with the ability to perform under very high workloads The ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment and obtain a system overview A high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills. The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore the key person must be able to work effectively in this language and have knowledge of the other. The tasks of the Key person will be carried out mainly at EUMETSAT facilities in Darmstadt, but travel within Europe may be required for certain activities.
