Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is updating conditions for flying unmanned aircraft 15–30 miles from Washington, DC. As of 12:01 am EST on February 10, operating procedures will allow model aircraft, commercial, and public users to operate in outer ring of Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA) under specific conditions. SFRA rule still prohibits unmanned aircraft operations within 15 miles of Washington, DC in Flight Restricted Zone without specific FAA authorization.

Safety alert issued by FAA to commercial passenger and cargo airlines urges them to conduct safety risk assessment to manage risks regarding transportation of lithium batteries as cargo. Also, guidance issued by FAA to its own inspectors helps them determine whether airlines have adequately assessed risk of handling and carrying lithium batteries as cargo. Safety risk assessment process further helps airlines that don't carry lithium batteries from inadvertently accepting them for transport.

FAA Administrator lauds aircraft emissions reduction concensus.

"I am pleased," said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta, "that ICAO reached an international consensus on a meaningful standard to foster reduction in CO2 emissions from aircraft." Referring to Global Carbon Emissions Standards Agreement, Huerta was "encouraged by this success" and noted it as "another example of the administration's deep commitment to working with the international community on policies that will reduce harmful carbon pollution worldwide."
