Concerned about rising reports of close calls and safety risks involving drones, the government announced Monday it will require many of the increasingly popular unmanned aircraft to be registered. Pilot sightings of drones have doubled since last year, including near manned airplanes and at major sporting events, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said at a news conference, and there were numerous reports this summer in California of drones interfering with wildfire-fighting operations.

FAA announced $27 million Airport Improvement Program grant to the City of Williston, ND to purchase land to build a new airport and meet growing aviation demand by replacing Sloulin Field International Airport. Oil drilling operations have increased Williston’s population as well as passenger traffic, corporate aviation activity, and cargo operations at Sloulin Field. Expected to open in 2018, new airport will be called Williston Basin International with XWA as 3-letter airport identifier.

FAA announces largest civil penalty it has proposed against a UAS operator for endangering the safety of U.S. airspace. FAA alleges that between March 21, 2012, and Dec. 15, 2014, SkyPan International, Inc. conducted 65 unauthorized operations in some of the most congested airspace and heavily populated cities, violating airspace regulations and various operating rules. Of those, 43 flew in highly restricted New York Class B airspace. These operations were illegal and not without risk.

FAA tests tech to spot illegal drone operators near airports

As the number of privately-owned UAVs have exploded here in the US, so too have incidents of hobbyist drones being flown too closely to airports. More than 100 incidents have been reported every month this year, up from a handful of occurrences in 2015, according to FAA deputy administrator, Michael Whitaker.
