A vacancy has arisen for a Mechanical Engineering Manager with Astrium Satellites in Stevenage. The successful candidate will support the Assembly, Integration and Testing of Prime Science Projects including BepiColumbo, Solar Orbiter and LISA Pathfinder. You will be responsible for the allocation of operational Mechanical team resources across projects, and overseeing the development and deployment of mechanical Integration and test methods and processes across projects. You will be responsible for managing a team of mechanical AIT engineers, carrying out appraisals, administration, training and recruitment of new staff. You may also support technical discussions around all mechanical aspects across projects. The key responsibilities of the role are as follows Overseeing the development and deployment of mechanical Integration and test methods and processes across projects Implement best industry practices Work closely with management team and HR function on organisational design in order to assess skills and training needs, workforce and succession planning Responsible for the Mechanical Assembly, Integration and Testing element and lead the Mechanical team on projects through phases A,B , CD and E Produce specs from test requirements, write test plans, test procedures and test reports Logistics control of all project Mechanical Ground Support Equipment, flight hardware and support equipment Alignment producing test procedures and operating and maintaining Optical alignment equipment Designing of test equipment, overseeing its manufacture, and commissioning Mechanical handling of Spacecraft, Instruments, payloads, solar arrays, antenna etc. Prepare and carry out environmental tests Vibration, Acoustic, Mass properties, Thermal at unit, subsystem, instrument and spacecraft level. Install and validate test instrumentation. Thermocouples, accelerometer, tilt sensors Support propulsion testing Handling and installation of thermal hardware Mechanical integration and testing of electronic units, subsystems and instruments, mechanisms, antennas, solar arrays, mechanical subsystems, instruments, payloads and spacecraft and control the documentation associated with performing these tasks. Pyrotechnic handling, installation and safety The successful candidate will demonstrate the following skills and experience HNC or equivalent in a Mechanical Engineering discipline Extensive experience of working in a manufacturing environment, ideally within Aerospacedefence industries Good knowledge of Mechanical build and testing Recent people management experience and proven leadership abilities as well as a track record of performance management Production of high quality documentation test specs, test plans, test procedures, AIT Plans Demonstrable experience of managing multiple projects simultaneously, prioritising and organising workload effectively, and working to strict deadlines Excellent clear communication to all interfaces Willingness to travel overseas to support operations Desirable Experience of producing test procedures and operating and maintain Opticaling alignment equipment TO APPLY click here

Astrium Space Transportation is an international leader in the space industry. Astrium is the prime contractor for the Ariane 5 Launcher, the Automated Transfer Vehicle ATV and many more spacecraft. The transportation system is mainly driven by its performance and cost. Therefore, mass is a crucial element, and mechanical engineering is one of the key disciplines for optimising in terms of mass and cost a transportation system, itself a multidisciplinary, complex and challenging task. Mechanical engineering is monitored throughout the entire product lifecycle. This job will involve performing tasks including predimensioning, analysis, strength verification and qualification of complex structures e.g. Launcher Upper Stage for Ariane 5, spacecraft and their primary structures. The candidate will be able and motivated to perform the following main tasks Being responsible for and defining load Predimensioning and verifying analyses under own responsibility, using analytical tools as well as commercial software Analysing static and dynamic strength using finite element FE programmes NASTRANAbaqus Deriving models from CAD data Catia Analysing finite elements to determine strength, deformations, stability, frequencies, and stresses derived from thermal environment, etc. Verifying strength of IF e.g. riveted joints, bolted connections Postprocessing using PATRAN Performing analyses under own responsibility within the team Interpreting, documenting and presenting results Elaborating design proposals to achieve functional, mass and cost targets Considering boundary conditions system aspects, production processes, material selection Coordinating tests test need definition, elaboration of requests for test questions, followup, test assessment, documentation We are looking for candidates with the following skills Degree in aerospace mechanical engineering or similar Excellent knowledge of CAE tools, NASTRAN, PATRAN Indepth knowledge of mechanics and mechanisms Negotiation level of English, advanced level of German, knowledge of French would be helpful TO APPLY click here
