Research Software Engineer Operations Support Salary 31,931 44,166 dependent on experience and band of successful candidate Location Harwell Campus, Oxfordshire Contract Permanent We have an exciting opportunity within RAL Space part of STFC for someone to join us as a Research Software Engineer, where you will develop and maintain software used to deliver JASMIN as a service, and to operate processes which support users in their work on the JASMIN platform. JASMIN is a globally unique facility for dataintensive computing for the environmental sciences. It supports a vibrant and dynamic community of researchers in the UK and internationally. Applications range from climate change and oceanography to air pollution, earthquake deformation and analysis of wildlife populations. Tens of petabytes of disk and tape storage are combined with several types of compute resource managed interactive and batch compute for building and executing large workflows, and an onpremise cloud providing projects and communities a set of service components with which to build and manage their own computing needs. Architected jointly between STFCs Scientific Computing Department and the Centre for Environmental Data Analysis CEDA within RAL Space, it is operated and supported by a small but innovative team with expertise in computer science, research software engineering and environmental informatics. Main duties of the role would include Web applications development, operational deployment and maintenance of services liaising with external users to set up the required storage or compute resources for their research troubleshooting helping to diagnose problems with user access to services including shared storage, batch compute and cloud resources writing technical documentation or training materials for colleagues and the external user community About you Candidates must have a degree or equivalent experience in computer science, engineering or another numerate subject, with some experience of software development and Python programming for the Linux platform. System Operations Engineer Earth Observation Satellites

Thorn SDS is a niche provider of specialist engineering services within the European Space Sector. Thorn SDS is part of the incumbent System Operations Engineering team based onsite at EUMETSAT providing services focussed on real time endtoend mission operations and the systems required to support them, including communications networks, operational infrastructure, operation security training and interfacing with Flight Operations. The services support the routine operational phases of EUMETSAT MSG and EPS systems, Copernicus systems as well as to support the preparation of future missions including MTG. We are bidding to retain these services and part of our solution enables us to showcase 1 or 2 high quality new candidates that we will propose join our team, on or around June 2022, to address the expanding client requirements. Whilst we are aware that it is impractical to completely commit to such a timescale, we are seeking candidates that are applying in the full knowledge that this is the likely time scale and can therefore plan accordingly. The role is based at our clients facility ESAESOC, Darmstadt and is a fabulous opportunity for an individual with excellent communication skills in English, to work on a number of hugely interesting programmes. The scope of the role is wide ranging and may include elements of routine operations services, operations preparations services and operations training. The tasks and responsibilities can be broken down as below System and ground segment operations Communications and networks operations System monitoring and reporting Operations security, infrastructure and training Multimission tools mass storage and archiving Implementation, verification and validation VV of systems and their evolutions Systems operations preparation and VV for new satellite systems Anomaly investigation Preparation and maintenance of operations documentation Training of operational personnel for systems operations Definition and development of operational concepts System VV activities for future satellite systems To be successful in this role we would expect you to have a university degree in an engineering discipline and proven experience in Earth Observation EO ground segments and systems operations in an operational environment. You should have a minimum two years of experience in system operations of EO missions covering a number of the disciplines listed in the tasks and responsibilities above and additionally, experience in the system operations engineering of complex EO ground segments and experience of VV of such systems. The role will develop with different missions so we are looking for engineers who can demonstrate initiative and flexibility in a fastpaced environment, perhaps already familiar with the EUMETSAT or ESA environment. Many of the systems operate with UNIXLinux operating systems so knowledge of this in an operational environment is a core requirement. You should be systematic in your approach to work, able to plan and cope with tight schedules you should be able to communicate articulately in English and be able to write accurate, concise, focussed and consistent technical documentation. Last, but not least Your experience in studies or early design phases of future Copernicus Missions e.g. CHIME, CIMR, CO2M, CRISTAL, LSTM or ROSEL will be a huge plus.
