Disney plans own SVoD service, to stop distribution with Netflix

(Telecompaper) Disney announced plans to launch its own direct-to-consumer streaming service and stop distributing its titles on Netflix. The consumer offer will launch in 2019 and an OTT sports service based on its channel ESPN will start in 2018.

SVoD service Iflix raises USD 133 mln to develop own content

(Telecompaper) SVoD service provider Iflix has completed a USD 133 million funding round. Proceeds from this funding round will be used to support iflix's local content strategy. The funding round was led by Hearst and also included new investors Singapore-based EDBI and clients of DBS private bank. Existing shareholders Evolution Media, Sky, Catcha Group, Liberty Global, Jungle Ventures and PLDT also increased their investments. The new round brings total funding raised by Iflix this calendar year to USD 220 million.

64% of U.S. households have an SVOD service

According to the Leichtman Research Group (LRG), 64% of all US households have a subscription video on-Demand (SVOD) service from Netflix, Amazon Prime, and/or Hulu. Among those who have an SVOD service, 51% have more than one of these services.

SVOD gaining perceptual parity with legacy Pay-TV

If forced to decide between legacy pay-TV or SVOD services, 57% of dual-service users would choose legacy pay-TV, 43% streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. This according to new insights from TDGs 7th annual Benchmarking the Connected Consumer study.
