Reuters: An Antarctic blizzard has halted an Australian icebreaker's bid to reach a Russian ship trapped for a week with 74 people on board, rescuers said on Monday. The Aurora Australis had to return to open waters about 18 nautical miles from the stranded Akademik Shokalskiy because of poor visibility, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), which is co-ordinating the rescue, said. The Australian vessel reached as close as about 10 nautical miles from the trapped ship before turning back....

Description As a member of the OPS Satellite Routine Operations team, the Consultant shall provide support to the development and operation of the Satellite Core Ground System. Main duties are the operation of the Spacecraft Mission Control System MCS in the context of the Core Ground System. The role comprises a range of tasks including the provision of support to the routine operation of the MCS, and the interfaces between the MCS and other components of the Satellite Core Ground Segment CGS. The engineer will be responsible for the definition andor maintenance of the routine operations procedures pertaining to the operation of the MCS and these interfaces and specifically Satellite configuration management and quality assurance practices. In addition, the Consultant will be expected to acquire and maintain a Systemwide view of the CGS, particularly in the areas of system monitoring control and data flows, due to the central role the MCS plays in the operation of the CGS. Also included is the review of any planned changes to the system configuration and the investigation of anomalies encountered through the routine operation of the MCS. The engineer will also be required to provide on call support as part of a team of MCS engineers. Profile In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, the Consultant shall have at least four years experience in the operation or maintenance of SCOS 2K realtime spacecraft control systems. Experience of Low Earth Orbit LEO spacecraft control systems and operations are essential. The Consultant shall have significant work experience with a UNIX operating system. The consultant shall have good communications skills, to allow the effective communication of information under a variety of circumstances. The Consultant should be used to working proactively within a small team, being able to work with the minimum of supervision. The variety of the tasks and the scope and complexity of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills. Description The Consultant shall perform tasks related to all aspects of managing the Satellite Mission Planning Facility MPS during routine operations. These include Performing Spacecraft routine scheduling tasks on all Satellite operational ground segments this includes routine weekly scheduling, rescheduling for a manoeuvre or a manoeuvre cancellation, and rescheduling at very short notice as a result of an operational contingency, possibly during the night or during weekends Performing Satellite routing scheduling tasks at the backup control centre in support of periodic or emergency activations, as defined within the Spacecraft Mission Planning team Managing and monitoring schedule execution on all ground segments on a daily basis and responding to anomalies and operational contingencies promptly Performing preventative maintenance on the MPS according to working practice. This involves deleting old database structures and files when necessary, and on a daily basis running MPS system checks to spot any system anomalies or errors Raising anomaly reports when necessary and monitoring their resolution through attendance at appropriate review boards. Supplying context and initial analyses that may aid the investigation of anomalies Maintaining a thorough knowledge of the Satellite space and ground segment operational needs that are met using the MPS. Keeping up to date with any changes to these needs, and with the Satellite space and ground segments as a whole. Organising meetings with relevant space and ground segment experts to discuss how best to implement new operational needs in MPS Maintenance, update and documentation of the MPS operational implementation. This consists of database structures such as resource, master schedule, operation, template, activity, procedure and event definitions, and associated rules that are used to implement operational needs. Performing judicious updates and associated testing as and when changes to the operational implementation are identified, or when bugsinconsistencies are found Rolling out of new versions of the MPS operational implementation onto operational ground segments when required, following approved configuration management procedures Maintenance and development of MPS documentation such as the User Guide and the Database Operations Handbook. The latter documents the operational implementation i.e. all database structures and rules Liaising with external entities e.g. NOAA in order to fulfil joint operations requirements. Maintaining documentation concerning this Participating in the definition of any changes to the supplied MPS application software or to our inhouse supporting software that could lead to an improvement in the performance andor ergonomics of the MPS. Contributing to the process of implementing such changes, and liaising with any external contractors that may be performing the changes Contributing to the definition and raising of Engineering Change Proposals, Small Change Requests and Change Requests concerning the Satellite MPS, and attending ECP Review Board meetings if necessary Contributing to the operational validation of new versions of the Satellite MPS application software, including testing of ARNCR correction and new functionality. This may include FAT or OSAT attendance Participation in any necessary meetings and reviews long term scheduling, schedule consolidation, anomaly review boards, etc Training of personnel in Satellite Mission Planning oncall and routine scheduling tasks as required Providing mission planning support to other operational missions e.g. MSG, MTG or future missions as required.
