The Mission Your main responsibility would be to provide onsite mathematical consultancy directed at assessing the feasibility, establishing baseline requirements and scaling key performance parameters of our customers future advanced space missions. The Challenge We are looking for three Mission Analysts to be located at the customer site, ESOC. The selected candidates will conduct mathematical studies and developextend associated application software. Mission analysis involves all aspects related to the launch or the orbit of a satellite and, to some extent, also to the satellite attitude for example Launcher requirements, launcher trajectory and launcher performance Tradeoffs for the selection of the operational orbit Launch window analysis Short and longterm orbit evolution Lifetime calculation Orbit manoeuvres and navigation Accuracy of orbit determination Parameter estimation Calculation of propellant budgets Lowthrust trajectory optimisation Geometrical event prediction Operations planning and scheduling Optimisation of scientific return Endoflife disposition. Maintenance and extension of existing mission analysis software packages, including USOC, INTNAV, LOTNAV, DITAN, MANTRA, SOURCE. Design and development of new software modules in support of novel scientific and application missions Performance of mission analysis studies. These positions are planned with a starting date of August 2013. Interviews are planned in Darmstadt for the second half of June, with the selection decisions tentatively to be announced on 5 July. Your Qualifications Applicants shall have a superior university degree, preferably in aerospace, electronics or astrophysics, mathematics, space engineering or other relevant discipline or other suitable qualification together with some professional experience. Essential skills are Excellent background in numerical and analytical methods of applied mathematics A deep grasp of classical and celestial mechanics Experience in scientific programming using FORTRAN, MATLAB and the UNIX operating system Familiarity with professional practices in software engineering and computer science English Fluency spoken and written, both in formal and informal situations. Note that English is the working language Applicants should hold appropriate documentation and permits for working and living in Germany. Desirable Familiarity with the specific mission analysis software packages in use at the European Space Operations Centre. JOB DESCRIPTION Simulations Officers are responsible for developing the training concept and the associated Simulation Plan to train the Mission Control Team, in order to prepare them for the launch or other critical phases of an ESA mission. This includes planning and developing failure cases of increasing difficulty to be introduced into the simulations, in order to train the Mission Control Team in nonnominal operations and application of mission rules. Simulations Officers are also planned to be involved with the operational training of other staff, including but not limited to Ground Operations Managers and ESTRACK Control Centre ECC operators. The Simulations Officer role requires familiarisation with both the space and ground segment. Simulations Officers are also involved with general training and simulation activities at ESOC. For a particular mission, the Prime Simulations Officer is responsible for the delivery of training to the Mission Control Team, supported by a Deputy Simulations Officer. The Deputy Simulations Officer is responsible for supporting the prime Simulations Officer in the delivery of training. This includes assistance with simulator breakpoint preparation, testing of contigencies, writing briefing and debriefing messages, and running simulations. The allocation of simulations officers to missions and ground facilities training is decided by HSOONX in consultation with the relevant GSMs and SOMs. For this position the following allocation is anticipated Deputy Simulations Officer for the SWARM mission Qualifications Applicants should have a University or similar degree in engineering or physics or similar discipline. Required knowledge Applicants should have good professional experience in spacecraft andor operational applications, preferably also in the area of training.
