BIO says Kyle Bass continues abuse of patent challenge system.

According to statement by BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood, billionaire hedge fund manager Kyle Bass continues to attack biotechnology companies with endless Inter Parte Review challenges to legitimate patents. Four new IPR filings against Acorda Therapeutics are particularly egregious, coming on the heels of Bass’ prior failed attempt to attack 2 of those same patents covering multiple sclerosis drug Ampyra. BIO again calls on PTO and Congress to quickly take action to stop this abuse.

BIO Announces Presenting Companies for 2015 BIO Investor Forum.

BIO announced initial list of presenting companies for 14th Annual BIO Investor Forum, which explores investment trends and opportunities in life sciences. Focused on early and mid-stage private as well as emerging public companies poised for growth in 2016, event will take place October 20–21, 2015, in San Francisco, CA. Event will also host Discovery Track presentations, which focus on companies incorporated after 2010 that have raised <$25M to date in seed or Series A financing rounds.

BIO Issues Statement on Acorda Therapeutics patent challenges.

In addition to applauding U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's decision to reject challenges to 2 patents held by Acorda Therapeutics, BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood stated that it remained critical for Congress and PTO to continue efforts to reform Inter Partes Review (IPR) process. This was, according to Greenwood, to ensure it operates in a balanced manner. Greenwood went on to cite 10 additional petitions submitted by Mr. Bass in the same month, an improper use of IPR system.

BIO RFS Study/Analysis shows carbon emission reduction.

Released by BIO, "The Renewable Fuel Standard: A Decade’s Worth of Carbon Reductions" shows RFS's requirement to substitute biofuels for fossil fuels has, over 10 years, displaced nearly 1.9 billion barrels of foreign oil and reduced U.S. transportation-related carbon emissions by 589.33 million metric tons. In addition to lauding success of RFS, BIO's Brent Erikson noted "unfortunate" delays by EPA in issuing new rules for said program and proposals to halt growth in biofuel market.
