System Engineer for EndtoEnd Instrument Chains MF Telespazio VEGA Deutschland has been supporting the European Space Industry for over 30 years, including ESA, DLR, CNES and EUMETSAT. This is a job for an university graduated engineer with at least 5 years experience in the development of Low Earth Orbiting Satellite Instruments. RESPONSIBILITIES DUTIES The activities for the selected keyperson will be related to overall System aspects for endto end instrument chains, i.e. involving the space segment satellites as well as the ground segment, the latter consisting of the data acquisition systems, monitoring and control systems, data processing facilities and product dissemination facilities. The keyperson will typically provide support for the following tasks contributing directly to the tasks andor following up work done in other teams Mission performances Identification of contributors to performances radiometric spectral geometric allocation apportionment to elements of the instrument chains. Definition of approach for performance modelling review of adequacy of related modelling tools. Compilation and analysis of endtoend performance budgets, as needed collecting input from space and ground segment studies cross check against applicable requirements. Processing chains Definition of overall approach for the development, verification and validation VV of the processing chains as part of the overall EPSSG System. Identification of implications of processing concepts for System ground segment requirements, architecture and design. Identification of required tools and test data for the development and VV of the processing chains as relevant generation of technical documents to support tool development procurement. Support for the development of relevant tools and the generation of required test data sets. Following up of validation of processing algorithms and of verification of processing chains in the ground segment as relevant for System VV of the endtoend instrument chains. Instrument calibration product validation Analysis of the implications of instrument calibration concepts for the System and ground segment and specifically for onground data processing. Support for the definition of the required infrastructure to perform tuning maintenance of calibration data and to validate generated products. In addition the keyperson will be involved in some more general tasks Regular review of System level documentation dealing with requirements, system concepts, architecture and design, technical analyses, to identify information of importance for endtoend instrument chains. In addition, and with the same aim, analysis of documents provided by other teams in EUMETSAT and by external partners. Support for coordination of interdisciplinary meetings of relevance for the instrument chains. Support for the preparation of documentation for System level reviews, during the covered period mainly the System Requirements Review and the Preliminary Design Review. QUALIFICATIONS EXPERIENCE University degree in the domain of engineering, physics or equivalent ESSENTIAL SKILLS At least 5 years of direct involvement in the development of relevant instruments EPSSG satellites will embark sounders and imagers from the ultraviolet to the microwave range, a scatterometer and a radiooccultation instrument andor the related onground processing chain, with an indepth understanding of mutual implications. Good overall knowledge of instruments, the platform environment, processing algorithms, ground segment environment, to the extent relevant for endtoend instrument chains. Demonstrated ability to perform analyses of a System combined space and ground segment top down and to perform syntheses and compile technical budgets bottom up. DESIRABLE SKILLS Familiarity with the development of test tools and the generation of test data sets. The keyperson shall be able to fulfil the assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision, have a systematic approach to work, be able to plan hisher work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks. Heshe shall have the capability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation. Good communication skills verbal and written are important. Heshe shall be willing to work in a team of engineers and in cooperation with industry and partner agencies. RESPONSIBILITIES DUTIES The activities performed by the keyperson will be an input for the overall System and ground segment VV activities. The keyperson will typically be involved in tasks related to test tools test data, with focus on tools data required for VV of instrument data processing chains. Tools can serve for example the purpose of test data generation manipulation reformatting, test data injection into the ground segment and test data collection analysis. Typical tasks include Identification of the suite of test tools and test data required to support VV activities, and definition of development procurement approach and associated planning. Preparation of User Requirement Documents, Statements of Work, etc., as needed as input for development andor procurement activities. Support for inhouse development and validation of test tools and their maintenance. Support for procurements of test tools test data, including the analysis of received deliverables and attending acceptance tests. Support for acceptance of test tools test data provided by partners. Simulation of test data sets for VV using available tools compilation of test data sets using real data from satellite instrument onground tests or inorbit operation. In case of tools to be connected to the ground segment, input for the specification and test of relevant interfaces. Support for configuration management of tools test data sets, using applicable EUMETSAT processes. Operation of the tools, or support for it, when used for system and ground segment VV activities. Contributions to the analysis of test results and the preparation of test reports. In addition the keyperson will be involved in some more general tasks Participation in relevant internal and external meetings. Regular review of System level documentation dealing with requirements, system concepts, architecture and design, technical analyses, to identify information of importance for test tools test data. In addition, and with the same aim, analysis of documents provided by other teams in EUMETSAT and by external partners. Support for the preparation of documentation for System level reviews, during the covered period the System Requirements Review and Preliminary Design Review Some activities will involve interactions with other teams, primarily in the LEO division, and also, as relevant for the work, with engineers at partner agencies. QUALIFICATIONS EXPERIENCE University degree in the domain of engineering, physics or equivalent ESSENTIAL SKILLS At least 5 years of general experience with the development of onground processing of data from satellite instruments for Earth observation. At least 5 years of direct involvement in VV activities for instrument processing chains, including production of test tools and of test data At least 5 years of experience with software specification, design and development and relevant standards. Very good skills in higher programming languages, such as Fortran, CC, Java. The keyperson shall be able to fulfil the assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision, have a systematic approach to work, be able to plan hisher work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks. Heshe shall have the capability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation. Good communication skills verbal and written are important. Heshe shall be willing to work in a team of engineers and in cooperation with industry and partner agencies. The Role Since May 2013, the Herschel spacecraft has had no liquid helium coolant remaining to allow the science instruments on board to operate, hence regular operations have ceased and the spacecraft has been placed into a nonreturning Solar orbit. In the ongoing postoperations phase, the Herschel Science Centre HSC, located at ESAC, is, inter alia, responsible for supporting data analysis improvements, oversight of the calibration and crosscalibration of the science instruments, and the generation of standard science products and their quality assessment as final Herschel archive products. Tasks For this service, the incumbent is expected to perform the following service tasks.
