DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 1000 PM CDT (0300 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Marty was located near latitude 16.3 North, longitude 101.2 West. Marty has been nearly stationary the past several hours. However, a turn toward the west or west-northwest is expected later tonight, and this general motion is likely to continue on Wednesday and Wednesday night with some increase in forward speed. On the forecast track, the center of Marty is expected to be near but just offshore of the southwestern coast of Mexico tonight through Wednesday. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Marty could weaken to a tropical depression Wednesday or Wednesday night. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles (130 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 999 mb (29.50 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- WIND: Tropical storm conditions are likely occurring within portions of the tropical storm warning area. Tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area later tonight or Wednesday. RAINFALL: Marty is expected to produce rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 inches over the Mexican state of Guerrero through Thursday. Isolated amounts of 15 inches are possible are possible in Guerrero from the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains toward the coast. These rains are expected to produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially in areas of mountainous terrain. STORM SURGE: A storm surge is expected to produce coastal flooding in areas of onshore flow. The surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves. SURF: Swells generated by Marty are affecting portions of the coast of southern Mexico. These swells are likely to cause life- threatening surf and rip current conditions.
