Two ASTM Nanotechnology Standards have been adopted by FDA.

U.S. FDA added two ASTM International standards to its List of Recognized Standards. These are E2490: Guide for Measurement of Particle Size Distribution of Nanomaterials in Suspension by Photon Correlation Spectroscopy, and E2535: Guide for Handling Unbound Engineered Nanoscale Particles in Occupational Settings. Guide for Detection and Characterization of Manufactured Silver Nanomaterials in Textiles (WK37636) is in development by ASTM's Nanotechnology Committee (E56).

ASTM Committee honors Dr. Maarten van Wijnkoop.

Maarten van Wijnkoop, Ph.D., holding master's degree in inorganic chemistry and doctorate in organometallic chemistry, received Harlan J. Anderson Award for outstanding contributions to ASTM International Committee C26 on Nuclear Fuel Cycle. He joined URENCO Nederland in 1997 as process development engineer and was promoted to head of Chemistry Services. In 2011, van Wijnkoop assumed his current role as senior technology manager chemistry in URENCO Central Technology Group.

ASTM Standard helps labs test for dissolved gases in water.

Proposed ASTM standard, WK43267, Test Method for Measurement of Dissolved Gases Methane, Ethane, Ethylene, and Propane by Static Headspace Sampling and Flame Ionization Detection will help environmental and testing laboratories ensure that drinking water is safe in areas in which hydraulic fracturing occurs. Laboratories would use proposed test to compare water from fracturing areas to water prepared with dissolved gases as a serial dilution.

ASTM International's future leadership was decided at October meetings of ASTM board of directors in Seoul, South Korea. Katharine E. Morgan, current ASTM vice president of technical committee operations, will succeed ASTM president James A. Thomas. To ensure smooth transition for ASTM members and customers, Morgan will assume ASTM executive vice president position on March 1, 2015 and work closely with Jim Thomas until his retirement on February 1, 2017.
