ASTM Standards will help educate nanotechnology workforce.

Nanotechnology Applications and Career Knowledge Network initiated development of two new standards designed to educate existing and future nanotechnology workers. E2996 provides basic educational structure in health and safety aspects of nanotechnology, describing minimum knowledge base needed for individual involved in nanomanufacturing or nanomaterials research. E3001 establishes basic structure for education in characterization of nanoscale materials at undergraduate level.

Proposed ASTM Standard will help predict unwanted boiler deposits.

Proposed standard WK48796, Practice for Determination of Water-Soluble Alkali Content in Coal, will help predict deposits caused by combustion gases in boilers of coal fired power plants. Interested parties, particularly coal chemists, are invited to join development of said standard, which is in development by Subcommittee D05.21 on Methods of Analysis. Those benefiting from this standard will include producers, labs, utilities, and auditors/accreditation bodies.

Revised ASTM Fuel-Container Standard was adopted by U.S. CPSC.

Used to help protect children from gasoline burns, 2015 revision of ASTM International standard F2517, Specification for Determination of Child Resistance of Portable Fuel Containers for Consumer Use, has been included in final rule by U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). According to ASTM's Phil Monckton, 2015 revision stipulates compliance for all accessories, spouts, closures, and other components that can be sold and used on portable fuel container.

ASTM Workshop will focus on analysis of hydrocarbon types.

On June 22, ASTM will hold a workshop on State-of-the-Art Analytical Testing Methodologies for Improving the Analysis of Hydrocarbon Types for Naphthas, Jet Fuel and Diesel Fuel Range Streams. Workshop topics will include techniques using chromatography and/or mass spectrometry etc. Appropriate methodologies may be developed further by ASTM sections to either improve existing ASTM test methods or develop new test methods.

ASTM Nondestructive Testing Committee honors Patrick Howard.

Patrick Howard, consulting engineer for nondestructive testing and measurement at GE Aviation in Cincinnati, OH, has received the Charles W. Briggs Award from ASTM Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing. Howard was honored for his continuous and outstanding contributions to the standards development work of E07 through its subcommittees, sections, and task groups. An ASTM member since 2004, he chairs the E07 Subcommittee on Digital Imaging and Communication in Nondestructive Evaluation.
