ASTM Standard covers cleanliness of reusable medical devices.

Proposed ASTM WK50782 standard will help develop test soils that validate cleaning methods for reusable medical devices. Standard will be useful to companies that make endoscopes, clamps, suction tubes, arthroscopic shavers, and other devices, as well as companies that provide cleaning systems for those products. Also, third-party reprocessors will use standard to validate their cleaning procedures. Task group developing standard welcomes interested parties to participate.

ASTM Coatings Committee honors Dr. Donald Snyder.

Retired chemicals expert Donald Snyder, Ph.D., formerly of Atotech, received Frederick A. Lowenheim Memorial Award from ASTM International Committee B08 on Metallic and Inorganic Coatings. Member of ASTM and Committee B08 since 1975, Snyder was honored for his competence and professionalism in technology of metallic and inorganic finishes. He works on several B08 subcommittees and is also member of Committee G01 on Corrosion of Metals and the Joint ASTM/NACE Committee on Corrosion.

ASTM President's Leadership Award honors Jane LaGoy.

Jane LaGoy, technical services manager at Bodycote, received 2015 ASTM International President’s Leadership Award. ASTM member since 2010 and active member of Committee B09 on Metal Powders and Metal Powder Products, LaGoy serves as B09 secretary and chairs Subcommittee B09.05 on Structural Parts. She has been instrumental in development of and revisions to key ASTM standards for powder metallurgy industry. She also works on other ASTM committees as well.

Proposed ASTM Standard will support, enhance zip line safety.

ASTM task group reorganized content and made technical updates to ASTM F2959, Practice for Special Requirements for Aerial Adventure Courses, in order to help ensure safety in zip line attractions. By being more comprehensive and tailored to zip line attraction industry with fewer references to other ASTM standards, standard would promote consistency in interpretation by zip line businesses. Proposed revisions relate to both engineering and operations.

ASTM Workshop addresses retrieval analysis of implants.

Scheduled for Nov 17, 2015, workshop on Retrieval Analysis of Implants, Tissues and Fluids will help attendees understand current and future needs for medical device surveillance and what standards are needed to allow analysis of devices to be performed in standard manner. Event will also provide forum for exchange of ideas pertaining to necessary surveillance measures needed to determine efficacy and safety of medical devices, as well as identify new opportunities for standards development.
