ALTIUS Mission Performance Engineer

Summary Brand new opportunity for an experienced Earth Observation professional to join the Telespazio UK team, working onsite at ESTEC, supporting the ALTIUS project and its goals. Objective The ALTIUS Project aims at the development of an Earth limb sounder mission based on a small satellite. Its main objective is the monitoring of the distribution stratospheric ozone at high vertical resolution in support of longterm monitoring and operational services. ALTIUS Measurements of concentration profiles of other atmospheric species as well as of aerosol extinction vertical profiles are also envisaged in the frame of monitoring and scientific activities. The contractor will contribute to all aspects project internal activities, monitoringreview of the relevant industrial activities, interaction with Mission Users and Scientists relevant to the mission performance of the ALTIUS mission up to Level 2. Reporting to the ALTIUS System and Engineering Manager. Responsibilities Duties The successful individual can expect to be involved in Maintenance of mission and system level requirements, monitoring and critically analysing the requirement allocation, their flow down to the relevant contributors, the associated margins, their evolution and their verification, in the following areas Observation requirements and mission data products requirements EndtoEnd simulator and Ground Processor Prototype GPP Internal and External characterisation and calibration of the instrument Supporting the payload team for aspects relevant to instrument performance requirements flowdown, and instrument performance verification, including relevant models and tools Following up the End to End Simulator and GPP procurement, verificationvalidation and acceptance activities Acquiring working knowledge of the tools for test data generation purposes and internal mission level verification activities Developing and maintaining additional mission performance mathematical models and tools to support the assessment of the relevant industrial development activities Maintaining mission level performance and error budgets, analysing their compliance with the endtoend mission performance requirements, and proposing corrective actions in case of deviation Monitoring and reviewing the definition and implementation of the ALTIUS characterisation, calibration and validation plans and follow up the specification, procurement and verificationvalidation of the relevant equipment and activities Supporting the preparation, execution and analysis of the relevant inflight CALVAL operations during the commissioning phase Supporting Payload Data Ground Segment PDGS development with the Ground processor aspects and crossverification activities of the PDGS operational ground processor against the GPP Supporting the running of the ALTIUS Mission Advisory Group MAG with concerns around mission instrument performance aspects, including endtoend mission performance verification and compliance status Interacting with the ALTIUS Mission Users Community and Scientific Community regarding Mission definition, Products definition and mission instrument performance aspects. Supporting the System and Engineering Manager and the other ALTIUS project team members in all aspects related to mission performance, as necessary for the effective execution of the ALTIUS project. Qualifications Experience University Masters degree or equivalent in a relevant Physical science or engineering discipline. Essential Skills Demonstrated experience in performance assessment of optical instrumentation for atmospheric observation including image processing. Experience working with Earth limb observation systems as well as knowledge of aerosols and ozone observational data. Proficient with programming languages relevant to the implementation and maintenance of the system performance models e.g. MATLAB and python. Solid analytical skills together with broad, systemoriented thinking, and the ability and motivation to rapidly learn and switch within a wide range of application domains. Capable of critically analysing the work performed by industry in the relevant areas, identify problems and propose corrective actions. Working within the LEO Low Earth Orbit Spacecraft Operations Team of the Flight Operations FLO Division, the Spacecraft Operations Engineer will support the operations preparation and operations of the future Metop Second Generation satellites, as well as the routine operations and monitoring of the Metop First Generation satellites. The main areas of focus will be the Attitude and Orbit Control AOCS subsystem, as well as the management of Onboard Software OBSW and its maintenance process. Within the LEO Spacecraft Operations Team of the Flight Operations FLO Division, the LEO Spacecraft Operations Engineers support flight operations of the Metop satellites and the development and operations preparation of future LEO satellite systems, in particular EPSMetopSecond Generation. The main duties will be as follows, with a focus on the AOCS and OBSW related aspects Support MetopSG satellite and ground segment reviews to ensure the correct implementation of operational requirements, and as a project team member i.e. timely provision of inputs to review data packs and responding to identified discrepancies Support systemlevel validation of the mission control centre facilities Contribute to the development, validation and maintenance of the operational baseline Flight Control Procedures, Operational Database, Automated Spacecraft Monitoring Scripts, etc. for both Metop and MetopSG Contribute to the planning and execution of Operations Validation activities for MetopSG. Role description summary The ADCS Propulsion team are responsible for the satellite attitude control, data handling and propulsion subsystems across the SES fleet of GEO and MEO satellites.
