Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands with resident assignment to ESRIN, Frascati Italy Description Software Systems Engineer in the Software Systems Engineering Section, Software Systems Division, Systems, Software and Technology Department, Directorate of Technical and Quality Management. Assigned as integrated support in the Software Systems Engineer function to the Vega and Space Rider Development Programme, Space Transportation Development Department, reporting to the Launcher System Development Avionics Manager, the postholder is responsible for all Vega and Space Rider technical activities in the flight, ground and verification facility software areas and for supporting guidance, navigation control GNC algorithm engineering. For Vega, the range of activities encompasses development of VegaC, VegaE and relevant Vega spinoffs e.g. Space Rider, SSMS dispenser, Venus. Duties Duties will notably include managing technical activities under the Vega and Space Rider Programme defining technical requirements specifications, architecture and interfaces with other subsystems, design definition, development, validation and qualification relevant to VegaC and Space Rider software and GNC algorithms, including failure detection isolation recovery apportioning technical requirements from system level to software and GNC, defining the relevant internalexternal interface specifications, from launch system down to launcher system and subsystems, launch base and launch range reviewing critically the engineering activities, in particular the performance of VegaC and Space Rider software and GNC algorithms including ascent, orbital, reentry and precisionlanding phases contributing to VegaC and Space Rider verification and validation strategy within the area of responsibility, in coordination with the system and avionics, including simulation and test facilities SWIL, HWIL campaigns participating in tradeoffs to select the most suitable sensors and actuators and advanced control techniques to meet the system VegaC and Space Rider performance requirements providing technical management of software and GNC in Vega production, in particular for the mission acceptance process, supporting the process for flight anomalies and nonconformances, assessment of requests for waivers or deviations, surveillance of the change proposal process and impacts on Vega launcher qualification status drafting the relevant statement of work, evaluating industrial offers, supporting the negotiation process for industrial contracts within this area of responsibility evaluating industrial deliverables and their formal acceptance by ESA within this area contributing to prepare milestones and reviews, including specific software and GNC reviews for the VegaC and Space Rider programs supporting exploitation activities relevant to flight trajectory reconstruction, comparing performance levels derived from flight data against predictions and GNC requirements. Additional requirements Knowledge of spacecraft systems engineering andor experience of launcher development and qualification and possibly launch system operations, ECSS and ESA standards would be an advantage. Experience of algorithm prototyping including closedloop and Montecarlo simulation 3DOF, 6DOF will be an asset. Job description For our customer, ESAESTEC, we are seeking a Space Systems Engineer to work at ESTEC in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. Responsibilities You will be assigned to a system engineering support contract with the ISS Programme and Exploration Dept. within ESAs Directorate of Human Spaceflight Robotic Exploration HRE. Today this includes missions such as the European participation of the International Space Station and the ExoMars mission which will put a rover on Mars in 2020. The focus of the job will be on the preparation of the future missions for example the next Mars missions after ExoMars. The initial focus of this activity will be working with the ESA team with the following duties Supporting the implementation of ESA internal and industrial system definition studies at Phase AB1 level, including associated technology studies for preparing future European activities and projects in the field of robotic exploration, addressing in particular future Mars Orbiter and Rover mission concepts. Qualifications Competencies The successful candidate will have A Masters level degree in an Aerospace Engineering or Space Systems Engineering or a related discipline. At least 4 years relevant professional experience ideally gained in the space industry. Relevant practical knowledge and experience in space mission design, feasibility studies, and the related informatics tools. Knowledge and practice in the application of ESA System Engineering Standards e.g. ECSSE10 series. Awareness of technology development roadmaps, technology readiness levels, and the associated risk assessment. Knowledge and awareness of potential international partners and their associated exploration programmes. Experience with requirements management and the associated tools, e.g. DOORS, would be an advantage. Prior experience of Mars robotic mission analysis and design would be considered a distant advantage. Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Description The Software Systems Division covers engineering, verification and validation techniques for space systems, in particular in the functional domain. This includes missioncritical software, software technology for flight as well as ground systems, realtime software embedded in spacecraft systems and payloads, but also ground facilities software, including electrical ground support equipment, test benches, databases and simulation and modelling tools. Future missions will rely on an increased level of autonomy to enable more complex missions and an increased performance. For the design of such missions, increased use is made of modelbased methods and tools, impacting the engineering information management along the lifecycle of the development. The impact of this evolution on the verification and validation process needs to be fully understood to ensure the required quality of these missions. Interested candidates are highly encouraged to visit the ESA website www.esa.int. Fields of activitiesresearch Future planetary exploration missions will require complex autonomous robotic systems. These systems will operate in a partially unknown environment and will feature adaptation and selfaware behaviour that could lead to emergent behaviour. To address the shortcomings of traditional Verification and Validation VV approach for space autonomous systems, the incremental development of the Harwell Robotics and Autonomy Facility HRAF has been initiated. The present development focuses on two out of three main activities of the VV process simulation and experimentation, with planetary rover as main application. In support of this development, the research will address formal methods and verification as part of the model based engineering process for specifying, developing, testing and evaluating space autonomous systems. As to achieve the proposed ambitious goal, these specific objectives are defined Identify gaps where traditional VV framework are misaligned or deficient for space autonomous systems Develop methods to automate requirements evaluation for testability and traceability Develop techniques to support appropriate decisions with traceable evidence during design phase Demonstrate the benefits and advantages of the research outcomes in HRAF. The research will entail SysML or equivalent modelling at system level, and mixed reality testing of autonomous robotic systems using HRAF HLA based distributed simulation environment. The post will involve collaboration across ESA directorates, academic and industrial partners.
