Post AOCS and Pointing Systems Engineer This post is classified A2A4 on the Coordinated Organisations salary scale. Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Description AOCS1 and Pointing Systems Engineer in the AOCS1 and Pointing Systems Section, GNC, AOCS1 and Pointing Division, Systems Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality. The AOCS1 and Pointing Systems Section provides functional support to ESA projects in the technical field of AOCS1 and carries out technological research in competitive, innovative and highaccuracy control systems, attitude sensors and magnetic actuators. Duties Reporting to the Head of Section and within the technical fields described above, the main tasks and responsibilities of the post holder will include providing expert technical support and consultancy to ESA projects, programmes and general studies in the field of in the field of AOCS and pointing systems incl. AOCS equipment and AOCS implementation and verification throughout all project phases participating in feasibility studies, project reviews and evaluation of procurement proposals identifying critical development problems and assisting in their resolution contributing to the definition of technology development requirements and work plans for the Agencys technology programmes defining, initiating and managing RD activities covering both long and shortterm needs and addressing both AOCSenabling concepts and hardware technology star trackers, sun and earth sensors, gyroscopes and accelerometers, magnetometers, magnetic torquers, etc. fostering new application areas for multidisciplinary activities, placing emphasis on innovative concepts, cuttingedge technologies and system architectures laboratory activities for the evaluation and prototyping of new AOCS, pointing systems and attitude sensors designs as required monitoring applicable scientific and technological trends and maintaining a stateoftheart expertise contributing to the dissemination of the results of the activities performed and the transfer of knowledge across the Agency. Duties may also include supporting other activities within the post holders field of competence. Technical competencies General background and specific experience in the technical domains covered by the position Handson hardware experience Understanding of related technologies, RD trends and the industrial landscape Project support experience in a relevant domain Experience with laboratory or field testing of relevant technical equipment Experience in the preparation of procurement activities for technology development and innovation statements of work, proposal evaluation, etc Experience in the management and monitoring of industrial activities, including participation in reviews Behavioural competencies Teamwork Customer Focus Innovation Creativity Problem Solving Results Orientation Planning Organisation Education A Masters degree or equivalent qualification in control and aerospace engineering is required. Additional requirements Applicants for this post should have at least eight years experience in the development and procurement engineering of a range of AOCS hardware units andor the development of satellite AOCS subsystem preferably with exposure to the full development cycle from design to launch. Preference will be given to those with strong expertise in two or more of the following areas related to the position AOCS hardware technology development, starting from low TRL, up to hardware qualification AOCS hardware procurement AOCS subsystem design, testing and verification incl. control design, analysis and simulation inorbit AOCS operations AOCS software and spacecraft avionics Other information For behavioural competencies expected from ESA staff in general, please refer to the ESA Competency Framework. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset. Main responsibilities For our activities in ESOC, we are currently looking for a Data Systems Engineer to cover the areas of the following two Mission Data Systems MDS Sentinels Mission Control Systems Engineering support Sentinels Simulators Engineering support. Initially the activity of the candidate will be fully dedicated to the Sentinels MCS Engineering support, however it should not be excluded that at a later stage tasks related to the Sentinels Simulators Engineering support may be covered. For both of these Mission data systems, the activity of the candidate will include Specification of the software requirements of these systems in collaboration with the operational users Definition and specification of their internal and external interfaces in agreement with the relevant parties Acceptance of the deliverables received from industry, ensuring correctness, completeness and compliance to the applicable requirements Support to the mission operations staff as required in the various operational phases, including System Validation Tests, simulation campaign and in software support coordination as part of the Flight Control Team during critical operational phases such as launches Coordination with other internal ESOC or external units, e.g. with the unit supplying mission data systems infrastructure and with the unit supplying the ICT systems and services Participation in research and development activities in the area of mission data systems Participate in the testing and validation of the various infrastructure elements used by the Sentinels MDS as well as definition of the future evolution of these systems Collaboration with other missions to ensure crossmission consistency and harmonization between Sentinel and other missions MDS systems, spinin from other missions into the Sentinel MDS and spinout from the Sentinel system to future systems including, but not limited to, future Sentinel missions. The tasks to be performed require considerable initiative, flexibility and independence in executing the assigned tasks. Ideal candidate Essentials The candidate shall have the following skills Good knowledge of Mission Control Systems for Earth Observation satellites and the EO MCS Kernel Experience as Software Coordinator for Earth Observation Missions including prelaunch activities and launch campaigns of satellites Familiarity with MICONYS and in particular extensive knowledge in the operational deployment of external systems EDDS, GFTS, DARC Ability to understand and accurately predict behaviour of complex systems Fluent in English Wellorganised, able to prioritise and manage several activities in parallel Familiarity with programmingscripting languages e.g. C, Java, JavaScript, shell scripting Capability to interact with users in customer oriented manner this include 1st and 2nd line support Experience working with operational missions, and particular previous experience with CopernicusSentinels missions Experience with the ESOC working environment including Procedures and Quality Management System QMS The ESOC MOIIT services e.g. ESOC operational networks, baselines etc. The ESOC SDE environment including the production and execution of Acceptance Test Plans.
