Spacecraft Operations Engineer SOE Heliophysics Spacecraft Systems

Thorn SDS provides specialist spacecraft engineering services within the European Space Sector. We have a new and immediate requirement for services within the Heliophysics Missions Operations Unit at ESA ESOC, Darmstadt. This is a fabulous opportunity for an experienced SOE with excellent communication skills in English, to work on a number of hugely interesting programmes. Once successful you will initially support Cluster II in extended routine operations and Solar Orbiter in cruise operations and will have opportunities to work on other missions within the Solar System and Explorations Missions Division. The scope of the role is wide ranging and includes Operations Supervision, Mission Planning, Spacecraft Performance Analysis and Reporting, Phase Execution, Anomaly Handling and Onboard Software. You should be able to clearly demonstrate experience in all of these areas. We expect you to have applicable knowledge and experience across all Spacecraft Subsystems and ideally be considered expert in at least one AOCS DH OBSM Power Thermal TTC Payload you should also be able to demonstrate your team player attributes ideally with experience of coordinating and interacting with other service providers in operations scenarios. The role will develop with the mission phases, and across different missions, so we are looking for engineers who can demonstrate initiative and flexibility in a fastpaced environment. With experience of the full lifecycle of spacecraft flight procedures and deep space missions, you will have carried out procedure creation, validation and simulations. You should have worked on SVTs, anomaly investigations and have a good understanding of spacecraft operations at system level. Programming skills in Python, a good understanding of general software engineering practices SQL, Djangi, Docker, GITLAB, experience with MOIS and a familiarity of the SCOS2000 mission control system would all be considered advantageous. Juggling tasks and making the most of the resources available to you will be essential in this role. We are searching for a Mission Control Systems Operations Engineer MCSOE with software engineering skills and experience to support our customer EUMETSAT, based in Darmstadt. As a full member of our excellent MCSOE team, you will deliver a state of the art Mission Control Systems MCS operations for the various GEO and LEO mission at EUMETSAT e.g. Meteosat Second Generation and MetopEPS. Beside the routine operation of EUMETSATs stateoftheart MCS, you will be involved in the preparation and early operations of the MCS for future missions e.g. Meteosat Third Generation MTG and MetopSGEPSSG. As be part of our MCSOE team working at customer premises enabling fast paced space operations including oncall and callout phases. Your Role You major role in the team are the MCS operations and operations preparation with a strong focus on the future MTG mission. You are the top tier member of a team responsible for the ongoing procurement, assembly, integration and validation of the MTG Mission Control System, your generic tasks will cover Coordination and support of all activities related to the integration and the verification of the MTG MC Chain. Supporting the MC Chain test design preparation engineers Active involvement and definition of test cases procedures for the MC Chain verification, validation, integration and nonregression testing to the MC Chain Supervision and review of the MC Chain testing schedule and coordination of the day to day activities of the MC Chain team members and associated test activities. Your Experience You hold a Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering or any other related area. You have 5 years or more of experience working in the operations of spacecraft mission control systems. You show the flawless problem solver attitude Your strength are in analysis, synthesis and presenting solution! Teamwork is your dedication You will work together with several teams in and outside of EUMETSAT you have experience in applying your interpersonal, communication and reporting skills in a multidisciplinary context. You have proven experience with UNIXLinux systems preferably in operations. Last, but not least your experience in Earth Observation Missions will be a huge plus! Additional Skills Operations preparation and routine operations of ground and satellite systems. Definition and development and or maintenance of spacecraft mission control systems. Relational databases and database management systems e.g. Oracle, PostgreSQL, MariaDB. Scripting or programming languages e.g. bash, CC, Java, perl, python. Use of configuration management systems such as CVS, SVN or GIT. Use of satellite simulators. Experience with MCS, especially SCOS2000 or HiFly. Be passionate about working in a dynamic work environment. Excellent communication skills. Negotiation level proficiency in English.
