Development Engineer Optical Verification Test Key Tasks and Responsibilities In this role you will support the optical instrument projects in the area of engineering and technical procurement of optical ground support equipment and metrology tools. Main tasks involve performing optical tests and measurements in the context of the verification of instruments and critical technologies in the Optics Laboratory, your responsibilities will include Definition of concepts, engineering and design of Optical Ground Support Equipment OGSE and metrology equipment based on the overall instrument verification approach Specification of OGSE and metrology requirements Provision of technical support for the procurement of OGSE and metrology components OGSE and optical metrology operations during instrument Assembly Integration Test AIT campaigns Definition, engineering and assembly of test setups for optical tests e.g. wave front error, polarisation, stray light, etc Definition and development of software and tools required for optical tests Performance of optical tests using the Optics facilities, including thermalvacuum chambers Evaluation and reporting of test data. Optical Sensor Calibration Engineer Senior 1620153 Job Description We are looking for a Senior level Optical Sensor Calibration Engineer to support the calibration of the Ocean and Land Colour Imager OLCI and Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer SLSTR instruments on the Sentinel3 mission, which EUMETSAT operates on behalf of the European Commission. Hence, the focus will be to provide an indepth understanding of the instruments calibration and characterisation in orbit. The calibration data and instrument performance will be analysed using existing tools and by developing inhouse tools for instrument calibration as well as vicarious and intercalibration to adjust and monitor the operational calibration systems. You shall support the Calibration Team of INRC competence area, in close collaboration with the Ocean Colour and Surface Temperature Radiometry teams in the Marine Applications competence area, whose activities the consultant shall primarily support. Your tasks will typically include scientific analysis of the radiometric and spectral calibration of Ll data from OLCI and SLSTR analysing results of prelaunch and inorbit calibration systems and characterisation data , including solar diffusers, straylight, nonlinearity, SNR, polarisation sensitivity spacecraft manoeuvres performed during or after commissioning developing indepth knowledge of the instruments operational processing chain applying the calibration monitoring tools to OLCI and SLSTR, which will include a combination of pseudoinvariant calibration sites Rayleigh scattering over the sea lunar calibration deep convective clouds intercalibration against collocated hyperspectral sounder observations developing specific components of the calibration monitoring tools to handle Sentinel3 data analysing results of these tools to provide information on these sensors performance performing comparisons with other instruments, such as A VHRR, VIIRS, MODIS to gain understanding of the performance of OLCI and SLSTR using GEOCAL tool developed by ESA to monitor geometric performance, providing recommendations to implement changes to the operational procedures and processing chains to improve the instruments calibration working with the team responsible for generating L2 products for these instruments to assess and improve the instruments calibration writing and reviewing documentation describing the instruments calibration and aspects oftheir Ll processing. The UK Astronomy Technology Centre UK ATC is the national centre for the design and development of astronomical instruments, telescopes and systems for both groundbased and spacebased astronomy programmes. About The Role We now have a new opportunity for an experienced optical engineer to join our Applied Optics group to support our growing, existing and future programmes. You will be involved in a number of projects, ranging in size from small design studies to large instrumentation projects, often involving multinational collaboration. You will be expected to take a lead optical engineering role in a high profile instrumentation project and to represent STFC within the wider community. You may be involved at any stage of a project, from working with astronomers defining requirements and generating conceptual designs for new instrumentation through to commissioning of instruments at a telescope site. Your role will involve designing and analysing optical systems, testing optical components, supporting the integration and testing of instrumentation and commissioning of instrumentation. Some travel will be involved to partner organisations worldwide, potentially including extended periods at remote telescope sites. About You You will hold a Post Graduate qualification in a relevant science or engineering discipline, with PhD level candidates desirable. You will have significant experience working in an optical engineering role, including experience of design of optical systems, along with experience of using ZemaxOptic Studio software in an optical design and analysis role. You will have the ability to work in a multi disciplinary project team, the ability to multitask and prioritise effectively and will possess excellent presentation and communication skills.
