Space Applications Services performs and supports system and software engineering for the European Space Agency ESA, National Space Agencies and the aerospace industry. We are involved in international manned unmanned spacecraft programmes, earth observation, science, exploration, communications and related technology development. We require staff, wishing to join our team to work in a dynamic international environment for the following position Optical Communication Payload Operations, Guidance and Navigation Engineer mf Tasks and Responsibilities The work will be performed at the European Space Operations Centre ESOC in Darmstadt, Germany. This position, generally referred to as a Spacecraft Operations Engineer SOE, is responsible for the support to the Sentinels missions as a member of the Flight Control Team FCT during the operational phases, including special operations, and will also participate in test campaigns. The position will include the following tasks and responsibilities Act as Expert operations engineer in the Sentinels Optical Communication Payloads and in the Guidance and Navigation areas, during Launch and Early Orbit Phase LEOP, Commissioning and Routine phases. Validation, test and operation of the Simulator and of the Mission Control System MCS including the OnBoard Software Maintenance OBSM and Mission Planning System. Generation, validation and maintenance of the Flight Operations Plan FOP primarily on Attitude and Orbit Control System AOCS and Optical Communication Payload OCP, but also for other subsystems. Support to test and operate the Network Data Interface Unit NDIU. Support for Flight Operations System FOS procurement, integration and tests. Review of satellite documents. Launch and Early Orbit Phase LEOP support responsible for AOCS. Commissioning support responsible for AOCS and OCP. The tasks to be performed require considerable initiative, flexibility and independence in executing the assigned tasks. Qualifications and Experience Applicants should have as a minimum a Bachelors degree in a relevant discipline and minimum 3 years of experience in Operations Engineering activities. The following qualifications and experience are required Demonstrates knowledge and experience in Satellite Flight Operations, including FDIR, in particular in the areas of optical communication payloads operations laser links, Sentinels OCP and guidance and navigation AOCS, Ground Navigation and control are required. Experience with Packet Utilisation Standard. Experience in working in an operational environment. Experience with flight procedures life cycle, including validation. Experience with anomaly investigations. Ability to understand and accurately predict behaviour of complex systems. Experience with low Earth orbit satellites operations, including experience in preparatory phase OPSPREP, special Operations LEOP, deorbiting campaign and routine operations. The ability to work independently with little supervision. Wellorganised, able to prioritise and manage several activities in parallel. Capable to coordinate and Interact with other service providers in operations and other fields. Fluent in English, both written and spoken. Familiarity with operational simulators, ideally SimSat, and management of SW life cycle. Familiarity with satellite control systems, ideally SCOS2000. Familiarity with Earth Observations missions, in particular with Copernicus Sentinels. Familiarity with Telemetry and Telecommand TMTC databases, preferably SCOS2000 compatible. Familiarity with multisatellite missions. Experience in ground tests preparation and execution, e.g. Satellite Validation Test. Experience in cooperation with Flight Dynamics teams. The following experience is desirable Familiarity with Network Distribution and Interface Units or similar Electronical Ground Segment Equipment EGSE. Familiarity with Mission Utility Support Tools MUST system used at ESOC. Familiarity with ESOC working environment and Quality Management System QMS. The position is located on site at ESOC and will involve short European travels. For one of our customers we are currently recruiting an Optical Systems Engineer for their location in the London area, UK. The organization is the worlds leading small satellite company, delivering operational space missions for a range of applications including Earth observation, science, and communications. The company designs, manufactures and operates high performance satellites and ground systems. Tasks and Responsibilities Development of spaceborne optical systems within a multidisciplinary team performing optical instrument system design, being the technical point of contact for the relevant optical systems. Design and development of optical systems from concept through to manufacture, system integration and verification. Management of new optical solutions including the programmatic and technical aspects of work packages relevant to area of expertise. Define and own technical requirements specifications for optical payload systems, including trade analysis of these requirements working closely with the spacecraft system engineer to identify derived requirements. Development planning, budget and schedule management Ownership of risk registers and appropriate mitigation as agreed with the project manager. The ability to pragmatically review and critique optical systems for application in space, balancing technical requirements with programmatic and budget constraints. Support to and ownership of, but not limited to Optical system architecture definition Optical design Performance evaluation and testing Subsystem and component specification definition Subsystem and component manufacture oversight Optical system alignment and testing Experience and Education BSc in Optics, Physics or engineering ideally with 3 years of related practical optical or spacecraft experience. Comprehensive knowledge of Optical Engineering, applied to space applications, coupled with a working knowledge of other engineering disciplines e.g. electronics, electrooptical device physics and optomechanics. Knowledge and experience of other spacecraft systems would be an advantage. The candidate should have basic optomechanical knowledge to aid in optical system development. Knowledge in materials and component selection, in the space domain. End to end Optical Engineering knowledge and experience including o Requirements Engineering and Trade offs o Electrooptomechanical Design and Analysis o Integration of Optical Systems preferably including Space Systems o Validation and Verification, including testing Design software knowledge, such as stray light analysis software e.g. FRED, SolidWorks, Ansys, matlab. Optical design experience with proficiency in Zemax is desirable. Scientific onsite consultancy support is sought to contribute to the development of product processing facilities of the EUMETSAT Polar System Second Generation EPSSG ground segment. The engineer will provide support in the area of optical imaging for prototyping activities and support to the generation of product generation specifications, calibration validation plans, test data and performance budgets. The engineers expertise includes optical imaging and strong programming skills. The initial support duration covers two years, starting in January 2016 two options covering one year each are foreseen. PROFILE Scientific consultancy will be sought in the areas of optical imaging to support the development work for the optical imagers METimage visibleinfrared multispectral, mediumresolution imager and 3MI Multiviewing, Multichannel, Multipolarisation imager. The engineer shall have the experience and capability to fulfil the assigned tasks with a minimum level of supervision. The engineer shall have the following experience and background University degree in remote sensing, meteorology, oceanography, physics, or equivalent At least three years of experience in the field of remote sensing in one or more of the areas listed above, including involvement in processing of satellite data up to level 1 calibrated geolocated radiances andor level 2 geophysical parameters Very good skills in a highlevel, compiled programming language, such as Fortran, CC, Java Fluency in commandline use on LinuxUnix platforms Skills in writing scientifictechnical documents Familiarity with Microsoft Office Good interpersonal skills in support of team work The following experience would be an additional asset Experience in understanding and specifying requirements Experience with the specification, development and validation of satellite data processing chains Experience with calibration and product validation methods Knowledge in radiative transfer. The engineer will work in a matrix structure providing crossdivisional support and be hosted in the Remote Sensing and Products Division of the Technical and Science Support Department. The engineer will work at EUMETSAT Headquarters, located in Darmstadt, Germany. The tasks and responsibilities will include Preparation of product generation specifications for the product processing facilities Prototyping of product generation functions Generation of product contents specifications Preparation of test data Preparation of initial calibrationvalidation plans Contribution to the generation of performance budgets Assessment of results from external studies Contribution to the initiation of scientific support studies System meetings and activities of instrument functional chain teams IFCT1 Participation in ground segment andor instrument reviews, progress and technical meetings.
