Spacecraft Ground Segment Data Systems Engineer

For our activities in ESOC, we are currently looking for a Spacecraft Ground Segment Data Systems Engineer. Tasks and Responsibilities The primary area of responsibility for this service is for Data Systems Operations Engineering, covering the areas of the following two Mission Data Systems MDS Sentinels Mission Control Systems Engineering support Sentinels Simulators Engineering support For both of these Mission data systems, the service includes Specification of the software requirements of these systems in collaboration with the operational users Definition and specification of their internal and external interfaces in agreement with the relevant parties Acceptance of the deliverables received from industry, ensuring correctness, completeness and compliance to the applicable requirements Support to the mission operations staff as required in the various operational phases, including System Validation Tests, simulation campaign and in software support coordination as part of the Flight Control Team during critical operational phases such as launches Coordination with other internal ESOC or external units, e.g. with the unit supplying mission data systems infrastructure and with the unit supplying the ICT systems and services Participation in research and development activities in the area of mission data systems Participate in the testing and validation of the various infrastructure elements used by the Sentinels MDS as well as definition of the future evolution of these systems Collaboration with other missions to ensure crossmission consistency and harmonization between Sentinel and other missions MDS systems, spinin from other missions into the Sentinel MDS and spinout from the Sentinel system to future systems including, but not limited to, future Sentinel missions. The tasks to be performed require considerable initiative, flexibility and independence in executing the assigned tasks. Requirements Good MCS knowledge Good SIM knowledge Familiarity with MICONYS Familiarity with SIMULUS Ability to understand and accurately predict behaviour of complex systems Service provision in English Wellorganised, able to prioritise and manage several activities in parallel Familiarity with programmingscripting languages e.g. C, Java, JavaScript, shell scripting Capability to interact with users in customer oriented manner. This include 1st and 2nd line support Experience working with operational missions, and particular previous experience with CopernicusSentinels missions Familiarity with the ESOC working environment, procedures and Quality Management System QMS Experience with prelaunch activities and launch campaigns of satellites Experience in softwaresystem design methodologies Familiarity with effective teamwork principles and team building aspects A proactive attitude towards problem solving and the ability to achieve solutions as required. You will be a member of a multidisciplinary system engineering team interacting with operational programmes and future programmes engineering teams. Within the Technical and Scientific Support TSS Department, the System Engineering and Projects Division SEP has the mission to provide coherent and costeffective engineering support to the development and operations of EUMETSAT ground segments, and to deliver delegated development and evolution projects to the Programmes Development and Operations Departments. The Reference Architecture for EUMETSAT Ground Segments provides a high level notional architecture for EUMETSAT ground systems, defining its functions, components requirements and capabilities and interfaces applying a modelbased systems engineering approach. The Reference Architecture is the result of a systematic and structured analysis of existing operational systems identifying those common function needed also for future programs in the form of crossprogrammes components as part of a designed architecture with an aim at establishing welldefined interfaces. TASKS Modelling of ground segment subsystems, addressing functional, behavioural and interface aspects Refactoring of the architectural design of existing systems within the context defined for the Reference Ground Segment Support the consolidation and evolution of the Reference Architecture Definition of requirements for the components of the architecture. For doing this, the applicant shall make use of ModelBased Systems Engineering approaches and tools to document the work done and describe the architecture of the system components. The MBSE tool available at EUMETSAT in support of functional analysis and decomposition of the system is CORE 9 from Vitech. The applicant will perform system engineering activities such as Requirements engineering, which consists in requirement analysis and validation, requirement allocation, and requirements maintenance Functional analysis and architecture design applying system modelling engineering methods and techniques Subsegment components specification Interface and data structures and flows definition Design which results in an architecture, described by its complete functional, physical and software characteristics System analysis, which is performed for the purpose of resolving requirements conflicts, decomposing and allocating requirements, assessing system effectiveness Performance of trade studies for assessing effectiveness, risk, cost and planning. The applicant is expected to perform the following specific tasks 1. Build models of Subsystem of the RA Ground Segment, capturing their requirements, describing the internal architecture and defining their external interfaces 2. Support the generation, review and maintenance of the documentation of the RA Subsystems addressing their architecture, functions, requirements and interfaces 3. Support the management of the requirements of the RA subsystem and Components, heeding on the evolution of the operational system and future systems, using DOORS 4. Categorise and link relevant Subsystem and Component requirements to the model for traceability 5. Refine the processes and working practices established for the application of the Model Based SE and the use of CORE 6. Support the administration, configuration, deployment and use of CORE licenses. PROFILE Essential requirements The applicant shall have a university degree or equivalent in an engineering discipline relevant to the job profile together with the experience and capability to fulfil the assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision. Knowledge and experience with the following is considered essential Extensive experience in the analysis of systems applications and modelling At least 5 years demonstrated experience in the field of systems engineering and architectural design Space and Ground System engineering processes, and System and Software lifecycles and standards. Experience in Model Based Systems Engineering methods, techniques and tools Experience in the use of modelling and design tools in support of architectural design activities e.g. CORE Definition, management and traceability of requirements structure with the support of dedicated tools e.g. DOORS. Desirable requirements Previous working experience in system engineering aspects of SystemGround Systems for MeteorologicalEarth Observation Satellites would be an advantage. Experience in evolution management andor product line management of assets shared across organisational parts is desirable. The applicant shall be able to fulfil the assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision, have a systematic approach to work, be able to plan hisher work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple parallel tasks. Heshe shall have the capability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation. Good communications skills verbal and written are important. Heshe shall be willing to work in a team of engineers and in cooperation with industry and partner agencies. Due to the nature of the position, the Key person shall have good interpersonal skills and proactive attitude with strong ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment. The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills together with the ability to effectively cooperate within the team and with internal customers.
