Scientific Support Engineer

We are looking for a Scientific Support, whom activities will include scientific and engineering aspects related to the scientific support to both SLSTR Levell Radiance and Brightness Temperature products and Level2 Sea Surface Temperature products. This will include contributions to the scientific development, maintenance, processors, calibration, validation, verification, and routine monitoring and offline analysis of Levell and Level2 SLSTR marine data products in support of the Copernicus Sentinel3 marine mission. The requested support is for the Sentinel3 SLSTR optical mission product chains, but aligning with the other marine activities relating to the mandatory missions. Remotely sensed marine data also originates from the current and future mandatory satellite programs EPS, EPSSG, MSG, and MTG. Several marine products are currently already in operations or are in development from sensors such as A VHRR and IASI on Metop and SEVIRI on MSG and may contribute to the Copernicus services. Such data may be needed to support the validation of Sentinel3 SLSTR data, through continuous intercomparison of collocated products. The candidate will work in a matrix structure providing crossdivisional support to the Copernicus Sentinel3 Operations Team and will be a member of the oceanography team of experts and scientists of the RSPMAsection of the Technical and Science Support Department. The tasks and responsibilities will include Support of the verification and validation oflevel2 products. Support of verification and calibration activities for level1 products. Support of the development of new tools for calibration andor validation as well as utilisation of existing tools. Support of the development of new tools for product processing monitoring as well as utilisation of existing tools. Investigation of anomalies and issues related to Level 1 and Level 2 product quality. Support to the setup and operation of product quality monitoring and reporting tools. Contribution to the analysis, assessment and maintenance of LlL2 marine satellite data processors and algorithms. Contribution to scientific development of algorithms to support CalN al activities. Contribution to the execution of scientific support studies. This is full time permanent position, located in Germany, with starting date as soon as possible. Required Qualifications This position requires a University degree in remote sensing, oceanography, meteorology, physics or equivalent. Scientific support will be sought mainly in the areas of optical imaging for oceanography products, in particular for marine and sea surface temperature products. Essential requirements are 5 year or longer experience with satellite Sea Surface Temperature andor visible and infrared data sets. Knowledge of the precursor mission to Sentinel3 SLSTR. Handson experience with the calibration and validation of remote sensing products. Hands on experience with the development of calibration andor product validation methods. Experience with operational satellite data processing. Very good 5 years or longer scientific programming language skills including C, IDLIPVWave, ENVI or equivalent and optionally Fortran, Python. Skills in writing technical and scientific documents Good interpersonal skills in support of team work Familiarity with Microsoft Office Fluent in English Desirable requirements Experience in the development and validation of satellite data processing. Experience with large data sets. Handson experience with the development of calibration and or product validation methods.

Other duties within the post holders area of competence as may be required by the hierarchical superiors in support of their activities. A good experience and knowledge of structuralmechanicalconfiguration design, development, testing and verification of requirements for Human Spaceflight hardware. A good knowledge of implications at system level of structuralmechanicalconfiguration aspects. Ability to effectively work in a team environment with other ESA organisations like Columbus Operations Division, and Technical Directorate and with Industry and to follow a proactive attitude to solving problems and also to work independently. The first of two Sentinel3 spacecraft is planned to be launched in mid2015. The Challenge We are looking for an experienced Software Engineer for Mission Control System Support, to be located at the customers site, EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, Germany. The main area of responsibility of this position is for supporting to the evolution and maintenance of the Sentinel3 Mission Control System. The Sentinel3 Mission Control System is built from MICONYS software components such as SCOS2000, FARC, PARC and NIS. Sentinel3 is a Low Earth Orbiting mission in the context of the Copernicus Services set up by the European Commission.
