SAF Operations Engineer

Thorns SDS is seeking an SAF Operations Engineer to provide support to various departments, coordinating and monitoring routine operations. All applicants must have a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline along with a minimum of 3 years of experience within operations of space related ground segments providing near real time services. The key candidate shall have experience in the following Engineering, testing, operations and maintenance of real time systems Monitoring of near real time data flows in large computer networks Earth Observation ground segment systems Cooperation with external entities Participation in the organisation and conduction of engineering reviews Formalised hardwaresoftwaresystem testing Scripting Languages e.g. Perl, Python, shell Knowledge and experience in the following areas would be considered to be advantageous. Imaging and sounding instruments for remote sensing spacecrafts Provision of real time data services in a high availability environment Development and validation of operational ground segment associated operations procedures UNIX operating systems Knowledge of some SW Development Standard used in Ground Segment Development, i.e ECSS Standards System evolutions and validation processes. The language for this position is English, therefore, candidates must have a good working knowledge of both spoken and written English. Typical tasks and responsibilities include Daytoday activities for new products and overall planning. The candidate be the prime interface with the SAFs for all relevant Operational issues as well as being the interface for the coordination of the implementation of new and updated SAF Operational Services and all related operational issues. To support the intended Climate SAF level 2 product generation and the follow up of the Climate SAF Metadata Implementation into the Data Centre in coordination with the climate experts in TSS. The maintenance and evolution of the operational procedures and documents for the concerned services To support to SAF Operational Readiness Reviews for validation of new SAF services andor products added to the existing services and systems To support the yearly SAF Operation Review, including monitoring of the swap to new operational satellite when available, in order to ensure continuity of the SAF operations. To provide support to other External Data Services team members in their activities related to other missions.

For our activities in EUMETSAT, we are currently looking for a SAF Operations Engineer to provide support to the Operations Department, in the Real time Services and system Operations RSO Division and shall report to the External Data Services Team Leader. The key person shall coordinate the routine operations and monitoring of the operational services. Furthermore the Key Person shall support the implementation and the operations preparations of new SAF products and services. The tasks of the key person will be carried out mainly at EUMETSAT facilities in Darmstadt, but travel may be required for certain activities. Tasks and Responsibilities The key person shall coordinate the routine operations and monitoring of the operational SAF and External Data Services and their upgrade to new products and services. In this area of work, the tasks will typically include Overall planning the key person will be the prime interface with the SAFs for the coordination of the implementation of new and updated EUMETSAT SAF Operational Services EUMETSAT Data Centre, EUMETCast Daytoday activities for new products the Key Person will be the prime interface with the SAFs for all SAF related operational issues SAF NRT Dissemination, SAF Archiving, SAF monitoring of EUMETSAT products Interaction with other operations teams the raising and tracking of SAF related anomalies Followup of the Climate SAF Metadata Implementation into the EUMETSAT Data Centre in coordination with the climate experts in TSS Support the intended Climate SAF level 2 product generation in EUMETSAT testing, monitoring, reporting Maintenance and evolution of the operational procedures and documents for the concerned services Maintenance and evolution of the operational EUMETSATSAF interfaces mainly for the EUMETSAT Data Centre and EUMETCast Support to SAF Operational Readiness Reviews for validation of new SAF services andor products added to the existing services and systems Support the yearly SAF Operation Review, including monitoring of the swap to new operational satellite when available, in order to ensure continuity of the SAF operations i.e MSG 3 to 4 Providing periodic Operational assessment and reporting of SAF products services performance in support to EUMETSAT SAF Steering Group SG members as needed Providing support to other External Data Services team members in their activities related to other missions. Requirements Essential In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, the candidate shall have at least three years of experience within operations of space related ground segments providing near real time services. The ability to perform under very high workloads and adapt to a rapidly changing environment is essential, conducting all activities in an orderly and disciplined manner and working calmly and correctly under stress. While the official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French, the working language for the position is English and therefore the key person must be able to work effectively in this language.
